Community Highlights: Meet Nicole Navarro of Pawsitive Beginnings

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Navarro.

Hi Nicole, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised on a thirty-acre horse farm in Western, PA which definitely nurtured and encouraged my love for animals. I would often disappear into the woods for hours on end, as I was an only child, and just sit with and admire nature. I am truly most comfortable in quiet and isolated settings.

In 1993, my parents sold our farm and my mother moved to Key Largo to open a Scuba Diving shop and I stayed behind with my father to finish high school. I graduated from Pine-Richland High School in 1998.

After high school, I attended a Computer Technical college in downtown Pittsburgh and immediately got a job doing website management for an online DVD company. In 2004, I moved to Key Largo, FL where my mother was.

I had a variety of tourist-related jobs from 2004 until today but in 2017, I started volunteering at the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Animal Farm after Hurricane Irma and that is where I met two foxes that would essentially change my life.

I had been around many different species of animals in my life, but never foxes. These fascinating and elusive creatures were surrendered by their owner to the farm and I quickly formed a unique bond with both. After doing much research on the captive bred fox industry, I realized just how many foxes are trapped in fur farms in the United States and that there was a need for people/organizations to be able to take in any foxes that were saved from these fur farms.

In 2020 at the pandemic started, I was asked if I would be able to take in two foxes that were being discarded from a fur farm in the Midwest and I quickly agreed. I had my necessary permits already in anticipation of one day having my own fox so the process to get them was much smoother.

I received my 501(c)3 status and Pawsitive Beginnings, Inc was born. Today I have five foxes that were all saved from the cruel fur industry and they will stay with me for the remainder of their lives.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My life up until this point has not always been smooth. I struggled with opiate addiction for many years and finally after many failed attempts, I got clean and sober in 2018.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Pawsitive Beginnings Inc?
