Community Highlights: Meet Melissa Fernandez of Cafecito and Confidence

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Fernandez.

Hi Melissa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m the Creative Superhero of Cafecito and Confidence, an online apparel store for coffee loving goal-getters. We help overwhelmed go-getters harmonize work and life with our content and slay their goals in comfort and style with our apparel.

I started Cafecito and Confidence after resigning from a corporate position. As I transitioned into the entrepreneurial world, I needed some type of income so I took a tshirt course and I instantly thought of coffee as my niche. I was born and raised in the Bronx, in a Dominican household where coffee has always been a staple. I knew that outside of my own home and community, people all over the world had rituals and traditions around coffee as well and the more I connected with people after starting this business, the more that this truth was enforced. I was also inspired by some recent moments where “cafecito breaks” were my saving grace. Before resigning my job, I had some pretty rough days. I worked in the hospitality industry as an operations manager for a space that was always GOING. I was literally that overwhelmed go-getter busting my behind daily because I needed to help support my family. Before each workday, having a cafecito with my grandmother or having a cafecito in plain silence was EVERYTHING. My current goal is to embody those feelings of warmth, love, and hope through Cafecito and Confidence. I dream to keep growing the business to create opportunities for those in my community and continue guiding overwhelmed go-getters just like me to the light at the end of the tunnel.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have been so many challenges along the way and definitely a lot of trial and error. I’ve always been hardworking so I thought I was prepared for the trials of entrepreneurship. What I was not prepared for was the years of unprocessed emotions within me after practicing escapism through work for so many years. I was also not as disciplined as I thought I was. From getting good grades in school to performing well at work, I learned that what I thought was discipline was actually obedience. My prior experiences did not teach me the importance of caring for myself and about how my wellness reflects in everything that I do, I was taught to push, perform, and execute for someone else’s benefit or for other people’s approval. A lot of my learnings have been around setting boundaries, being present, making conscious decisions, simplifying life, and most importantly taking responsibility for my life. Those are the same learnings that I try to share through our content at Cafecito and Confidence.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Cafecito and Confidence?
At Cafecito and Confidence, we help overwhelmed goal-getters harmonize work and life through our content, rep their love for coffee, and slay their goals in comfort and style with our apparel. Our apparel is cozy, expressive, and can be dressed up or down. One of our biggest differentiating factors is how adamant we are about sharing actionable items for our Cafecito Squad to apply to their lives regardless of where they live or work. What I’m most proud of at this moment is the quality of beings in our audience, our Cafecito Squad, I’m so thankful for the small but mighty group of people who support us. Our Cafecito Squad is so full of love and they’ve been there through the peaks and valleys of the business. It makes me excited to continue improving the business and our offerings for them.

What makes you happy?
Silence makes me happy. I love enjoying slow silent moments especially with a coffee in hand. I’ve spent a lot of years rushing from one task to the next and while some moments in life still require some hustle, slow silent moments are truly non-negotiables. They’re my opportunities to just be, to do nothing or to reflect and get some clarity on next steps in life or even in the business.
