Community Highlights: Meet Lisa L. Baker of Ascentim

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa L. Baker.

Hi Lisa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My career began in financial services. I spent 30 years in corporate America, working my way up the ladder into one leadership role after another at some of the world’s biggest companies. I eventually realized that what I valued the most during that time were the opportunities to mentor women who were coming up behind me.

These were employees who had incredible potential, who were maybe being overlooked because of their gender or color. I knew – because I was just like them once – that with a little coaching, they could go so much further. Being able to give them the guidance, sponsorship, and helping hand that I wish I’d had in my early days felt like a true calling.

When you feel called to do something, it’s usually wise to follow your inner voice. I took the leap, retiring from corporate life to embrace my passion and my purpose. I founded Ascentim, a coaching practice that allows me to support others on their journey to high levels of success. We just started 18 months ago and coach clients (virtually) across the US. Building a business from the ground up has been interesting, challenging, and really fun!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’d be suspicious of anyone who said success was a smooth road! It rarely is. (And it’s not a straight one, either.) In my experience, both lived and observed, the road to success is paved with obstacles and failures. But the obstacles, when overcome, lead to new and often unexpected opportunities. The failures are necessary because (hopefully) we learn from them, which is how we ultimately grow. The struggle is what makes success so sweet.

Like everyone else, I experienced a number of personal and professional setbacks throughout my corporate career. The important thing is that I learned from them, persevered, and got stronger and smarter because of them.

In founding a start-up, I’ve discovered a whole new set of challenges. These are things that most small business owners can relate to. Capital concerns and how to fund business expansion; scale and building the right team at the right time; determining best practices in lead generation strategies to attract the ideal client; building brand recognition and generating awareness; and time management – solopreneurs are doing it all themselves, and we still need to deliver great service to our clients. It can be A LOT.

I’m incredibly grateful to have all of my past experiences under my belt. The successes and the failures both equipped me with the tools I’ll need to face these challenges and come out on top. I’m also lucky to be able to rely on the connections I’ve made and my personal board of advisors. Because of them, I don’t have to know or do it all… I just need:

• A strategic vision

• A plan to achieve the vision

• Access to resources, tools, and other experts as needed

As you know, we’re big fans of Ascentim. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
My purpose is to show people how to level up and live the life of their dreams. This can include getting their financial house in order and/or reaching new heights in their career. Many of my clients are high-performing women who feel undervalued in their careers. They want to get promoted into leadership and executive roles, but they’re unsure of how to get what they want, or they’re faced with some barriers.

I love nothing more than helping them take a sledgehammer to that darned glass ceiling so they can get the job AND the money. Together, we identify their value and work on communicating it with impact. I’ve also seen how many women never received basic financial literacy training. That can really hold someone back and prevent them from enjoying a life of abundance, so we work on that too.

For anyone reading this and finding that it resonates, I want you to know that help is available. Please visit my website to schedule a free consultation.

There are a few things that set Ascentim apart. One is our unique G.R.O.W. coaching methodology that drives real results. We focus on the three pillars of connections, careers, and finances. You’ll find that most career coaches don’t offer financial education, and most finance coaches won’t work on fast-tracking your career. With me, you get it all: you’ll earn more money, learn how to manage it properly, and build meaningful connections to support it all. I also donate 20% of profits to worthy organizations as part of Ascentim’s mission to give back.

I’m so excited to share the results we’re seeing for my clients – promotions, pay raises, paying off debt, and building net worth. I’m proud of my clients who are doing the hard work to get where they want to go. And I’m thrilled to say that Ascentim is already an award-winning practice! We’ve earned a Stellar Business Award and recently received a Globee® for Women Owned StartUp of the Year. Most notably, we made Inc.’s 2022 Best in Business list in the Coaching/Career Development category.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
A lot of important lessons came out of the pandemic. For me, it was eye-opening to see how it shifted our priorities. The Great Resignation came along as people realized they didn’t want to spend 40, 50, or 60 hours a week doing work that didn’t align with their values.

It’s had an interesting impact on my work, too, because that’s what I do. I help clients get clear on who they are, what they value, and what their purpose is. Once we have that figured out, there’s nothing standing in their way. They can go forth and spend their time, energy, and effort on what matters most to them. That I get to be a part of that process is an incredible honor for which I give thanks every day.
