Community Highlights: Meet Kristen Belisario of Starflower Plants

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Belisario.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Kristen Belisario but I also go by Koko, I am a Filipina American and was born and raised in Los Angeles. I work full-time as a Pediatric Psychiatric Registered Nurse (& charge nurse sometimes) at an inpatient mental health facility that serves children ages 4-17 years old. During the beginning of the pandemic, I spontaneously started a business called Starflower Plants. Through Starflower Plants, I wanted to raise awareness on decreasing mental health stigma as well as promote the use of coping skills with plants. The motto I came up with for my business is “Spreading love through life”. Starflower Plants does not only resemble an online plant shop but something bigger that resembles all backgrounds and beliefs. Through Starflower Plants, I wanted to provide my community with the tools to raise awareness on mental health wellness. I continue to strive to make my brand productive for the people one day at a time. Keep going, keep growing 🙂

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As a mental health nurse and founder of Starflower Plants, I always strive to stay positive for my people as a leader. Everything is never smooth, but one will always encounter struggles along the way. You will be hit with unexpected events and situations but what matters is how you cope with them. One of the struggles I try to work through is finding the time to balance work, Starflower Plants, grad school, and pleasure. Sometimes I run on low, but I push because I know that I could make a difference in people’s lives within my career and business. My best advice is to use all your struggles as a strength to strive and go beyond what you thought you were capable of.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Pisces sun, Leo moon, and Taurus rising. I have always had a passion for mental health in which I became a registered nurse to become a psychiatric nurse. I am currently in grad school to complete my Master’s of Science in Nursing education to advance my career into a psychiatric nurse educator. As a nurse educator, I am hoping to become a professor of mental health nursing where I could further raise awareness on mental health wellness and decrease the stigma associated with mental health for future registered nurses.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
As a pediatric mental health nurse, I cherish my childhood memories. I enjoyed the days that I was able to spend with my cousins at my grandparents’ house, at a family party, or at the beach. My favorite childhood memory was probably not being responsible. I enjoyed not worrying about time, work, money, and what day it was. All I thought about was what I wanted to eat, what show I was going to watch, and what toy I wanted next. I was raised around the appreciation of gardening and farming; my grandparents had a yard full of Filipino veggies that we would pick. At a young age, I was introduced into the beauty of mother nature.
