Community Highlights: Meet Jomil Conste of Mind Over Body Apparel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jomil Conste.

Hi Jomil, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Mind Over Body Apparel was started during quarantine. I noticed that a lot of people on social media were struggling a lot due to the pandemic, and a lot of people were getting into physical fitness. Workouts and tagging your friends were becoming big on Instagram, which helped people stay connected with one another. While I was going through my own fitness journey, I also noticed the mental health journey I was going through as well. It was tough to get up in the morning when I wasn’t working out or when I wasn’t reflecting on my goals and life in general. One day, I woke up and thought “I’m sure I’m not the only one going through it during this pandemic. There must be others out there feeling sad, anxious, and maybe even worse. I want to help.” Coming from a Psychology background and finishing my BA in Clinical Psychology, I wanted to incorporate mental health into one’s everyday health. I thought that in order to be physically healthy, one must be mentally healthy also. Slowly, people are more open to talking about their own personal struggles, but many still face the stigma with mental illness. I wanted to break that barrier and let everyone know that they are not alone, and as a community, we can get through our struggles together.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road at all. I don’t have any background in business, but I had to learn a lot of things on my own. Reading up on what I can and can’t do, freshening up my knowledge in Psychology, and dabbling on marketing were a couple of things I was doing to ensure that my brand is able to reach some success. Whenever things were getting hard or frustrating, I always told myself that putting in the work and working hard will always flourish in the end. Don’t give up! A couple of the struggles I encountered were time management and marketing. I really had to dive into Instagram marketing, Facebook marketing, and putting up Mind Over Body Apparel’s Instagram page. I didn’t know what look or what format I was going for during the first couple of months. The only thing I was well-versed at was talking to people and helping people problem solve their personal struggles. I didn’t know how to put it out there.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Mind Over Body Apparel is a brand that helps empower people to open up about mental health with the help of fashion. We make apparel that are comfortable to wear and appealing to the eye, but most of all, they make a statement. Lots of people will ask/comment “I like your shirt. It has a strong message.” Fashion has become a great way to make a statement, and we thought “Why not us?” We want to make mental health conversations easier and we want those who buy our merchandise to feel that empowerment we’re trying to emphasize. Overall, we want them to feel less alone throughout their journey; whether they’re just starting or halfway into their path. Overall, I’m very proud of the community we have slowly built. We love that people are acknowledging their own needs, and they are also seeing the light at the end of the tunnel with the help of everyone in our community. Because of the people that support our brand, we were able to raise money for homeless individuals in Los Angeles. As we grow, we would like to shed more light on various topics that are surrounded by mental health, and this is just the start. There is so much more to unravel for the world to see. We’re very excited! For the readers, I want them to know that our brand was created to help, to give a voice, and to help give acknowledgment. We want to continue this and we want to build an inclusive community that will help us create difficult conversations. “Let’s Talk About It” as we always say here at Mind Over Body Apparel. We are an unfinished open book, and we’d love for you to help us write our story to help you with your story.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was always very hyper, extroverted, and social. My peers would always tell me that I made it look so easy to make friends. For me, I love the feeling of being able to help others and connecting with various individuals to get different inputs! Without everyone that I’ve met so far, I wouldn’t be where I am or who I am today. Back in college, I shifted from Nursing to Psychology. Psychology has become such a great treasure for me because it helped me understand myself, my family, and those around me. I truly believe that without my degree, I wouldn’t be as understanding, as open-minded, or as caring if I didn’t study Psychology. Back then, I was so interested in people’s choices and why they made certain choices in life. I was interested in understanding feelings and emotions. I also loved the mystery in meeting people. Everyone has different opinions and approaches in life, and Psychology has helped me understand those various decisions.
