Community Highlights: Meet Jessica Lampkin of The Evolve Effect

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Lampkin.

Hi Jessica, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am a born and bred LA Baby. I grew up in Carson and went to USC for school. I’d say this is where I began to get a true idea of my talents. I started braiding hair in my dorm room which turned into sew in weaves and other protective styles for a good majority of the African American girls on campus. I quickly learned that I had a knack for hair, but I also built some really cool long-lasting friendships with my clients from school just from the time we spent together. I would get calls or texts saying how inspiring I was as an individual and that they were looking forward to the next time they could come to my dorm to have their hair done…LOL. This was also showing me that I had a gift to engage and inspire others on a level I wasn’t previously aware that I could. Although I discovered these gifts in college, I still didn’t know what to do with them. I went on to work in Corporate America for upwards of 10 years. This is where I learned so much about my knack for business, which was the final piece of the puzzle for me.

In 2016, after recovering from a life-threatening illness, I decided to take control of my life and put my God-given gifts to work. In 2017, I opened The Evolve Effect which started out as an online Hair Extension company which I knew I wanted to grow into something much bigger; an opportunity to use beauty to inspire heightened confidence in women just like myself. 4 years later, I still own the online Hair Extension & Wig store. I also have a brick & mortar located in Upland, CA called The Evolve Effect Hair Extension Studio. The Evolve Effect Hair Extension Studio is a luxury beauty studio & hair store where we offer full-service Hair Extensions, Wigs, Nails, Waxing, Lash Extensions and More! My Hair Extension and Wig line is the main source of business, as our demographic of clientele are working professionals, moms, wives, fellow business owners and peer Boss Bishes. They don’t have a lot of extra time on their hands to cater to themselves but also want & need to look snatched! I wanted to create a space where they could come and not only transform their look through their hair (which is vital to a woman’s self-confidence) but also experience other top-notch beauty services, quality products and comradery all in one place.

I want every client to walk out feeling evolved, not just on the exterior but on the interior as well. If we play any role in making that happen, then we have done our jobs. I lead a team of affiliate service providers who I have mentored to all be their own bosses. Each of them rent their space from me but also are learning from me. On a daily basis, how to run an effective self-employed beauty business of their own, how to level up personally so they too can evolve and arrive as their very best self. I truly love making others feel good. I think people who feel good just pass that energy on and the trickle down of that makes the world a better place. So I guess you can say what I do is my little mark on the world.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely been a rough uphill battle to arrive at where I am now. Before I decided to leave Corporate America, I was hit with a severe case of Graves Disease. This health crisis was life-threatening and lasted for about eight months. During this time, I was bedridden, so it gave me an opportunity to really think about what I wanted in life and if I wanted to continue working as hard as I was, missing time with my family and compromising my own health to pad someone else’s pockets. If I was literally going to make myself sick, I might as well do it while making my own business flourish. While I was down, I did some self-reflection.

I had three gifts/ talents: 1) I’m great with hair, 2) I’m great with business, & 3) I am known for being an inspiring individual. How can I bridge those three gifts/talents together to make money? That is when the light bulb came on. I used my time off to build out a business plan and as soon as I was better, I quit my job and went after it! Of course, the journey of building and scaling a business has come with many challenges as well, not to mention COVID and the multiple mandatory closures. What keeps me grounded and focused on continuing to push towards my goals is a dedicated routine around maintaining high-frequency energy which includes daily meditation, working out at least three times/week & scheduled self-care (massages, family time, or solitude).

At The Evolve Effect, our mission is to build confidence in women through the exterior and working inward. Therefore, the process of purchasing hair extensions and other beauty products should not be taken lightly. It is more than a transaction. It is an experience. This is why we provide a luxury experience; we call our location a studio instead of a salon because it is more than just a space where you come to get your hair done. Our clients do truly Experience the Evolution!

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
My five years growth plan is to continue to make a mark on female confidence through the following avenues: 1) Accepting insurance coverage on medical wigs & non -surgical hair replacement for clients experiencing hair loss due to medical conditions 2) Expand & acquire more retail & studio locations 3) Continue to grow online Brand awareness (podcast/YouTube channel)
