Today we’d like to introduce you to Haley MacDonald.
Hi Haley, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My business partner and I met when we were both teaching at a local indoor cycling studio. During our time there, we came together over our shared frustration for not being able to be true to who we were in a corporate setting, we were done changing who we were and agreed it was time to do things our way. We decided, as women who refused to change who we were for what society expected of us, to push the limits and do something most people are afraid to. So we started Rebel. We moved quick and in a matter of two months it came to life.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
(Laughs) Owning a business is unbelievably challenging in general, and just one year into our business the pandemic hit. It has been the most difficult struggle daily. Like all small business owners during this time, we have had to adapt in a matter of a day. As women in business, it’s still very common to not be taken seriously. Most people just don’t think we’re tough enough to hang with the real challenges of business. Oddly enough, this second year for us was easier than the first. You just learn so much about who you are and what you’re capable of. It really changed me to my core. I am no longer afraid to stand in my own skin and trust who I am.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a women-owned business, and my role in the business is managing memberships and the day to day operations. I have also continued to teach.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
YEAH. Opening a business itself. We truly had no idea what we were doing, but we were passionate about what we knew we wanted to offer. We just made the jump. Now with the pandemic, it’s a risk every single day. We’ve had to pivot at least four different times at an instant to keep up with the ongoing new rules and regulations being forced on businesses. It’s a wild ride, but we’re so proud of what we’ve overcome.
