Community Highlights: Meet Ginger Liu of Ginger Media & Entertainment

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ginger Liu.

Hi Ginger, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born in Los Angeles and grew up in England. When I decided to give LA a go for myself, it was right at the beginning of the recession in 2007-2008. I couldn’t find any employment, so I decided to create my own work. I started out as a freelance writer and event and PR photographer but I wasn’t happy not calling the shots, so I founded Ginger Media & Entertainment as a boutique PR and social media marketing agency. At the time, I was interviewed as one of the first who was using social media to promote independent film. It was tough at the beginning but when I was down to my last $50, things took off and I was earning thousands of dollars each month. I should add that my background education and experience is in photography, media, arts, and entertainment, and living in Hollywood gave me the confidence to be my own boss and to consult others.

My creative side is also important and I turned my Hollywood apartment into a portrait studio where I photographed the amazing talents of the Hollywood burlesque and cabaret scene, as well as actors and musicians. I have photographed the live Hollywood burlesque scene for a number of years and it’s a wonderful community. I have an MFA in Photography and I am pursuing a Ph.D. in Fine Arts. I produce stills, videos, experimental films, and books.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I moved to Hollywood with my two cats, not knowing anyone, and without a job in the middle of the biggest recession in decades. The hustle for work was stressful but I knew that as long as I had money to pay rent and put food on the table, then I could get through the recession and life will improve. Because there were no jobs, I created my own work and found work as a writer and photographer, and eventually, I started my own boutique PR SMM agency. There will always be ups and downs with the world economy. The recession taught me to spend within my means and save every spare penny I earned to cover the hard times ahead. I used my time to learn everything I could about my industry and learn from my mistakes.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We promote international independent film and art through media, festivals, shows, streaming, etc. We also help talent – directors and other creatives. We consult business and creative leaders in how to be thought leaders and we develop PR comms and content strategies to achieve their goals. We mainly work with US indies and directors and international indies and directors who want promotion in US and UK markets.

What matters most to you?
Family. My family is all over the place in England and Southern California and wherever I am in the world, I miss them. I value their love, support, and that special family bond.
