Community Highlights: Meet Donald T Boone of BoxedUp

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donald T Boone.

Hi Donald T, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I came from pretty humble beginnings. Born and raised in Seat Pleasant, MD, a suburb of Washington, D.C., it was a rarity for kids like me to grow up and make it out of our city. My dad battled depression and challenges with mental instability following what was a tough upbringing for him, so my mom was really forced to step up and carry the load in many ways for our family. Thankfully, she did everything she could to ensure my brother and I stayed on the right path, guiding me to North Carolina A&T where I used engineering to earn my way into Corporate America. But not long after beginning my career, I started to lean into my entrepreneurial side. Where I was once content in fulfilling these desires through multiple “side hustles”, the urge to think bigger and take more risks in order to make an impact on my community and on the world took over. From there, I joined Amazon, where innovation was an expectation and informative for what I would eventually build in BoxedUp.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Ha, all of it has been a challenge! CHILDHOOD Looking back on it, my early years were far from normal. The aforementioned challenges my dad faced exposed themselves to our family and made life pretty difficult. From the age of 3, my father was in and out of employment, getting laid off from multiple jobs as he battled failed drug tests and addiction. This made for a home environment that was violent, verbally abusive, and sometimes unsafe. Basketball was my outlet, and so I submerged myself in it as often as I could. In parallel, our neighbors sold drugs so crime, police sirens and gunshots were normalized for me at a pretty young age. Before the age of 18, I saw gun violence put my oldest brother in jail, put my next door neighbor in the ICU, and see gunshot wounds cause serious damage to both my father and high school girlfriend. EARLY JOURNEY OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP While succeeding in the business world came naturally, successfully leveraging that experience for my own endeavors has been anything but that. To get my first startup off the ground, Oleo, I cashed out my entire 401k and used more than half of it to finance building a mobile application I thought customers would love. I’d later find out that nobody wanted it, and I couldn’t get money from investors to pivot and build anything else. In 2017, I was forced to scrap the idea and start from scratch on another project.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
BoxedUp is the first online rental marketplace that allows equipment owners to ship their gear to customers instead of relying solely on in-person transactions, the first company to provide an Amazon-like experience for rental products. Today, customers don’t have many rental options and for the ones that they do, they’re category specific. On the other hand, equipment owners have very few ways to monetize their seldom-used equipment, and during COVID, a lot of the options they have to use their items have been heavily impacted by COVID. For the rental platforms that do exist, they force equipment owners to meet renters in person. Our marketplace connects renters and owners and is used by over 165 customers, including 5 in the fortune 500. During COVID, we’ve completely transformed virtual engagements and events, helping content creators create high-quality content from their home, providing end-to-end support for virtual content. Once travel begins to pick back up, we have everything travelers need from drones to GoPro’s, ready to be rented!
