Community Highlights: Meet Cesare Safieh of Hair By Cesare

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cesare Safieh.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hairdressing has been in my blood (family) since I was born. My nanny was also a hairdresser and I would watch her create wigs when we were together. We moved to the US during the Civil War in Lebanon and I knew that I wanted to pursue being a hairdresser.

I went to school at PCC in Pasadena and graduated in 1982. From there, I became an assistant in a Beverly Hills Salon. I was blessed to work as an assistant to the amazing talent of Gene Shacove the stylist who helped invent the celebrity hairdresser and was the inspiration for the movie “Shampoo.” Additionally, I continued advanced courses with Alan Busch, Michael O’Rourke, and Hairdreams hair extensions to become a hair extension specialist. I have been working here ever since. I returned to Pasadena to be closer to my family and to start my own salon business.

In 1997 owning Hair By Cesare is not work for me; it’s my passion and I love each and every one of my clients as family.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In addition to being diagnosed in 1990 with a rare genetic disorder and facing numerous medical challenges, I continue to strive to advance my career and knowledge of the hair industry. It’s incredibly hard to make everyone happy, you have to listen to the client and be consistent in what you do to meet their demands. Some want you to be a magician and it just does not work that way.

I consider myself an Artist in all aspects, and hair is like a canvas, you work to create three dimensions that give life to their hair without damaging it. Sometimes you have to adjust the process and create something new. I’m always excited when clients allow me to be more creative.

As you know, we’re big fans of Hair By Cesare Inc. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Having been through my own medical challenges, I made a choice long ago to specialize in hair extensions. It was not about vanity or celebrity but to help clients who struggle with hair loss. Hair loss/ thinning hair is one of the biggest beauty issues clients come to me with. Hair loss can lead to poor self-esteem and motivation. Up to 60% of women in the U.S. will experience some kind of thinning hair or hair loss and alopecia in their lifetime – and this number is growing.

Utilizing Hairdreams hair extensions and Volume Plus products, we create a plan that helps women feel more beautiful and empowered to surmount these challenges. There’s no better feeling than seeing the smile on a client’s face when I turn the chair to the mirror. I only use the best for my clients and chose Hairdreams due to their commitment to quality and customer service. They understand not only the needs of the stylist but also the client’s needs.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I would have to say most of my clients know this, but others may not. My second passion is art. In my free time away from the salon, I create all forms of art. From metal sculptures to mixed media canvases to photography. My garage is full of pieces I have created which friends tell me I should sell and share with the world. But for me, it is just the way I relax.

Recently I was commissioned to do 15 pieces of art for a client out of state which was perfect for me as it was during the time the salon was closed due to the pandemic. I created a studio in my home and could spend hours listening to music and creating. You never know what is going to emerge, and unlike with clients’ hair, I have no boundaries or restrictions to limit my creativity.

Also every year, we host a party (well except for last year) as a client appreciation night. Live music, food, loads of fun, and we select a charitable cause and promote that cause to clients along with donations. In prior years we have donated to Ability First, Toys for Tots, Hillsides Summer Soles.
