Community Highlights: Meet Blaire Porter and Brit Murphy of Threads of Fate

Today we’d like to introduce you to Blaire Porter and Brit Murphy.

Hi Blaire and Brit, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We met in 2006 while playing college softball together in NYC. Blaire pitched and Brit played center, and on off days we would wander the streets of Brooklyn or head to Arlene’s Grocery for liveband karaoke. Having been friends for so long we always dreamed of collaborating on a business but never reached that stage until 2018 when we decided to make an Oracle deck together.

For those who don’t know, Oracle decks are a tool for divination, they help you connect with your intuition and the spiritual realm. It took us about a year to finish the deck and we were so grateful to be funded through Kickstarter. We spent most of 2019 making new editions and new decks, ending with a total of five. When the pandemic hit, things got interesting. Blaire was raised by a doomsdayer so that first week was rough – she was slightly (read: very) worried we would never sell another deck again, so we asked a friend to run some digital ads for us. Our solid business started to grow rapidly, ending with us taking it from the living room to the oversized shed and now into a warehouse. Like everyone, the pandemic has taught both of us a lot and given us amazing healing opportunities as well as business opportunities.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
We have been really lucky for the most part, as our struggles have been mistakes that we have made rather than big external events. We are grateful to have one another because neither of us are inclined to blame – when one of us makes a mistake (even a big one like not catching something in a proof that gets printed on 5000 decks!), we are able to move through it together and laugh it off. Owning a business is like building a plane while you’re flying it so while it IS serious, we believe it’s important to be a team and keep looking toward the sun. We certainly have rough periods and obstacles crop up, but when you work on them together to problem solve, they aren’t as memorable.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Threads of Fate?
We noticed that most people don’t realize how powerful they are, so we created tools that would help them discover their magic, strength and intuition. We are super proud to be self-published deck makers and we strive to make the experience for people who use them as lux and beautiful as possible. We prioritize top quality materials like thick cardstock and having gold and holographic foils. It makes photographing the cards a tad more difficult but the experience of using them is amazing! Our hope is that anyone who uses our decks feels empowered in their intuitive abilities and feels capable of creating the changes they want in their lives.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I think we will see more people making decks and a lot more experimentation in look and content. Crowdfunding makes launching a tarot deck accessible and we have seen a lot of new + beautiful decks out recently. I also think we will see people experimenting more with different mediums, including expansion in the digital realms.
