Today we’d like to introduce you to Z LA.
Z, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I am first generation American born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. Both my parents are immigrants to this country from opposite ends of the world but somehow found themselves right here in this very place.
Growing up in LA, I was blessed to be surrounded by such diverse arrays of culture; part of that culture were these epic murals that undoubtedly inspired me to start drawing. Early on I would draw as much as I could, whenever I had a chance. Drawing turned into using markers, markers turned to paints and finally paints turned into cans. I always considered myself an artist but I find that one of the most important decisions I ever made was deciding that this would be my life’s work, no matter what challenges or obstacles I was faced with.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am an illustrator and a painter. I am more figurative in my approach and usually use characters and shapes to express my ideas. Most of my work deals with the notion of city living. You will often find my characters piled and stacked on top of each other representing busy and overcrowded environments that comes with city living. I feel I cycle between mediums depending on the projects and opportunity. Murals and canvas are by far my favorite mediums. I also like to breathe life into illustrations with animation. The new year is already bringing on some great new projects and I look forward to sharing them with you.
How can artists connect with other artists?
Work on your craft and people will start contacting you. Don’t be afraid to reach out to artists that you admire or respect via email or social media. Many artists seem to be introverted but that’s a hindrance. Get out of your shell, go to as many art functions or events as you can, and eventually, you will start meeting other like-minded people.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I have several murals in and around Los Angeles. Some of these murals are solo projects, while others are with great collaborators. I have been painting at live events and have done several group shows last year. If you want to support my work, you can find me via social media @zla_la, come to any shows I am a part of, or purchase some prints or stickers from my website zla.la.
