Check Out Tiffany Townsend’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Townsend.

Hi Tiffany, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m an opera singer, a soprano to be exact. I’m originally from Jackson, Mississippi. I started playing piano at age seven and went to an Arts school in my home town called Power APAC from 4th grade until I graduated from high school.

I studied classical piano and my first job was as a church musician. I went to college at Millsaps College which was down the street from Power APAC where I got a scholarship for piano. During the second semester of my freshman year, I was practicing for a church choir rehearsal in a practice room and one of the voice faculty heard me. He then told me I should take voice lessons and I did. From there, we found an operatic voice and he encouraged me to major in opera and audition for music schools. I did and ended up getting into The Juilliard School. I went to Juilliard for my Master’s and felt that I needed more time to learn the craft since I started a bit late and was accepted into the Curtis Institute of Music for a Professional Studies Certificate in Opera. After graduating from Curtis, I was accepted into the Young Artist program at the LA Opera and I’m now in my second year here and that’s how I got here.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I’ve been very lucky in certain ways I’ve also struggled. I hadn’t really sung before college so I felt I was very behind and had to play a lot of catch up compared to my classmates and colleagues. It’s also a very expensive career so I had to get through those hurdles but I had a lot of help along the way from within my communities and amazing people who believed in me. I also had a personal journey in feeling that I truly belonged in the art form and learning to love both my voice and myself.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an opera singer. I’m known for being a singer and musician. I’m proud of the work that I’ve done and the progress that I’m constantly making to be better everyday. I’m most proud of the work I’ve done in inspiring others. People have messaged me or when we get a chance to meet say that I’ve inspired them to either sing or get into opera and that’s something that I think is very special.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is being able to create art and inspiring others. I think that when you find your true purpose, you put your passion into it and that passion inspires others to seek out their own which I think is one of the most important aspects of life.
