Check out The Swells’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to The Swells.

We’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
We started with Matty and our previous drummer as a two-piece (Drums, Guitar). Jason joined a few months later playing baritone sax, filling in the low end. About a year later, Wyatt recorded our first single and started playing bass with us, followed by Neil (who went to school with Wyatt) playing keys. After our first album, we wanted to implement a trumpet player live. Cuco played trumpet on our first album; so as of this year Nathan has been playing trumpet and flugelhorn with us live. Josh our current drummer joined us about a year ago. It’s been a gradual development and we love the way the sound is progressing.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
We’re a band of friends that love and respect each other musically and are inspired by artists such as Charles Mingus, Jack White and the indie-jazz scene as a whole right now. One of our main goals is to promote self-expression and spread sophisticated, yet enjoyable music, that serves as a soundtrack to people’s lives.

The stereotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
Stay focused. In this day and age, you can make a great sounding album with very little money. You don’t need a huge studio or a ton of gear to make your album (or any artwork for that matter). Let your creativity take control, you can pretty much make anything you want on your or a friend’s laptop. Also, don’t be discouraged by what other people have, chances are they also started small. Keep your eyes on the prize babies.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Our music is on any and all streaming platforms (Apple Music, Spotify, iTunes, etc.). The best way to support us is to buy our music, come to our shows, and spread the word to your friends!
