Today we’d like to introduce you to Shirly Wijaya.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In February 2019, I opened a dance studio and my life is changed forever. People asked me all the time… why did you open the studio? What made you decide to open a studio? Going back to 2018, I was much heavier in weight and felt unhealthy. One day, my friend suggested that I should go to a cardio dance class. I enjoyed it so much and started to go regularly… I ended up opening up a studio of my own. I started to take choreography classes and fell in love with dancing even more.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. In 2019, when I first opened, I had to let go of my partner who was essential to the business. I had to refocus my goals and really hustle to build the studio back up again. Trying to think outside the box and by fall 2019, things were getting better and studio was finally breaking even and making a profit by the end of the year. And of course… 2020. We all know what happened to small businesses because of COVID-19. We turned to doing live classes right away… I didn’t really make any money from it but it was important for me to still be connected to my community. Because of the support of my community that we made it through 2020.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My goal is to create a community of people that share the love of dancing, no matter what your dancing levels or goals are. “Progress Over Perfection” is our main focus at the studio, as I am personally still learning, training and taking classes every day. Dancing can be extremely intimidating and I want everyone to feel welcomed and comfortable… it is a no judgment zone… this is what sets us apart from the other studios. At the beginning, the focus is more on fitness but it is progressing into a dance studio. It is only natural and fitting because of my love for dancing. We offer a variety of dance classes for all different levels by amazing instructors. I only have instructors that I personally will take classes from.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I won’t be here today if it wasn’t because of the support of my community. My instructors, my friends and everyone who have been coming to take class at the studio and help promote the studio. Word of mouth is everything. To my amazing instructors, who are understanding and have been so supportive by promoting their classes and give it 100% despite of the situation we were in. It is just an amazing thing to be a part of a community that is incredibly supportive. I am also very thankful for my supportive husband who definitely been incredibly vital to the success of the studio.
