Check Out Shafonda Atkins’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shafonda Atkins.

Hi Shafonda, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hourglass Exercise Studio is a newer business that was started in September 2020, based out of Norwalk, CA. It was opened during the pandemic. Prior to the pandemic, I was a competition cheer coach. I developed a love for working out once I realized how much of an impact it has on the person’s mental health, as well as their physical health. One of my cheer parents suggested a separate workout for our children, aside from cheer practice. I liked the idea and decided to try it out, but to include the parent as a motivational tool for both the parent and child. I had planned to begin working out of a gym, offering a Mommy & Me workout class. Once the pandemic completely changed the course of the direction I thought I had for my business, I was left to figure out how I could continue to make a difference in people’s lives, although meeting up to workout was out of the question. I began to offer online classes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 6:00pm. I began to receive phone calls from people in regards to what I was offering being in higher demand. I then began to get feedback from those that wanted to participate that did not have children. I started to question how I could meet everyone’s needs and continue to grow as a business. I began to offer private virtual training sessions, and this is when Hourglass began to take off.

I am currently training clients online, as well as in person, following the social distancing requirements. I begin working each morning at 8:00am, and my last virtual student is at 8:00pm. I host a monthly group workout called POWER HOUR. It is 1 hour long, every 2nd Saturday of the month. Because of the restrictions due to COVID-19, each person works out on a yoga mat that is 6 feet apart from the person they are next to in each direction. Each person also wears a face mask during the workout. The goal of Hourglass Exercise Studio is to provide a unique and innovative environment where confidence is the building block. Our purpose is to inspire and motivate each individual to become a better version of themselves. Through self-discipline and dedication, any goal is attainable. Hourglass would like to become your inner voice while on your fitness journey. We are more than just physical growth and strength, we want to train the mind to be just as strong as the body. Hourglass Exercise Studio is looking to expand as wide as the business need allows. We are looking for new clients, rather it be virtual or in person. I’ve realized through the pandemic just how important mental health is. Hourglass has served as a vessel and has been therapeutic to so many, with just being able to workout and release and regroup.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
So far business has been ok. Because it was started during the pandemic, it hasn’t gotten the exposure Id like for it to. I have friends that are also small business owners that help me spread the word on their social media platforms. Once life resumes back to normal, I’d like to attend different business expo’s and things of that nature to promote Hourglass Exercise Studio.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Being that I’ve been a cheer coach for 5+ years now, I’ve always had to remain physically fit in order to keep up with my team. I believe in leading by example, so if there is a necessary skill that I am asking one of my team members to perform, I can also show them an example of what I am asking them to do. I specialize in personal and group training. I customize each person’s workout to fit their specific goal/need. I am known for helping my clients meet their workout goals. I am most proud of the success stories that have been produced from Hourglass. I am proud that my business is flourishing and that people trust me as a trainer to get them where they want/need to be with their fitness goals. I believe in my workouts, I see the results. I am also a product of Hourglass Exercise Studio. That is what sets me apart from everyone else, not only does my business have a reputation very early on, I myself am growing with my business. It will continue to grow.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I would say, find someone that shares your same passion and get to know them. Ask a lot of questions. I feel like there is always so much to learn from those that have been in your line of business for years before you. My stepfather owns a gym in North Carolina, and any question I have, I call him and ask. Any ideas I have, I run it by him to get his thoughts and opinion. I would also suggest finding two or three like businesses and becoming acquaintances, as they can assist you with your needs locally.
