Check Out Scott James’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott James.

Hi Scott, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Born and raised in Guelph, Ontario – Canada (to which I have a current listing in my hometown). Immigrated to the States in the early 2000’s and now situated in Los Angeles. Spent many years working and living in mainland China while involved in different industries such as importing and exporting. There I developed fantastic relationships with factory owners and entrepreneurs that had global investment portfolios that we’re seeking to further diversify their future investments in other industries. With my passion for architecture, attending frequent public open houses and the early support from friends to urge me to enter into the real estate arena made my decision somewhat simple upon completing a business and future marketing plan.

In 2011, I completed my State exam and began a search for a reputable brokerage firm namely Coldwell Banker. (2011-2019) My first year in the business awarded me the Rookie of the Year!… and through the years, I received numerous awards and accolades. (Go to scottjamesluxuryestates.com to view all of my awards).

In 2015 – 2017 while actively participating with my real estate duties, I was diagnosed with stage 1 Colon Cancer, Although it was caught early they had to remove my colon and five subsequent surgeries later, I was deemed Cancer Free!!! At that time, I could have easily have folded and given up but with my Canadian roots, tenacity and a little stubbornness; my will to succeed overcame all obstacles.

Starting in 2017, I had the pleasure of meeting a very unique and extremely gifted individual, Amit Apel (Award-winning firm, APEL DESIGNS INC) while searching for a local Malibu design/architect firm after securing property for my client overseas and also my future plans to build and live in Malibu. The Woolsey fires were devastating in 2018 and certainly put a hold on development until the community of Malibu with the efforts of the city of Malibu began an expedited task to rebuild Malibu. On the evening of the fire heading towards the hills of Malibu both Amit and I were touring investment properties for consideration. Because of my past experience with Chemo, I had an immediate reaction to the smoke. It was time to go and later, I found out that Amit and his family narrowly escaped the fires while literally escaping with the clothes on their backs from their home in the hills. I was so impressed with how quickly Amit rebuild his life from the ashes that we had something in common and today he continues to rebuild Malibu while we work on current projects, Maliview Estates and the AVIATOR, two exciting developments that will soon arise from the ashes! I’m proud to say Amit is a friend and one hell of designer/architect!

My future plans we’re to continue the journey on my real estate path but also contribute back to those who have helped me through my medical hiccups. I created a candle and soap company (www.malibusoapandcandle.com) that infuses soy wax, essentials oils and cotton wicks that have a healthy aroma with no carcinogens that could cause cancer. Chemotherapy can play havoc on your cells, skin and hair so I replaced all of my store purchased soaps and begun using my organic soaps to soothe the pain and be rid of all the toxins I’ve absorbed over the years. When I’m active with sales, I like to donate part of the proceeds towards cancer research. With my import/export company, I donated PPE during the COVID-19 to hospitals and critical caregivers and doctors that in the early stages desperately needed medical supplies.

In December of 2019, I decided to join a unique and dynamic luxury brokerage firm with headquarters in NYC and offices throughout the United States, Not too mention a persistent and talented manager, John Butler was pretty convincing and sold me on the impressive platform that DOUGLAS ELLIMAN had to offer me in my rapidly growing business. What was more impressive was the exclusive partnership with Knight Frank touted to be the world’s largest brokerage firm based in London, England but with a vast network throughout Europe and Asia! This was the perfect platform to take me to the next level.

In 2020 during the peak of the pandemic, I successfully completed a large transaction of a beautiful property in Bel-Air between the talented entrepreneur and business magnate Elon Musk and my client in Shanghai. A realtor’s dream to have been honored and humbled with transacting this deal!

I continue to strive for excellence and broaden my real estate endeavors while appreciating my brief stay-overs in the hospitals that resulted in an epiphany that has secured my success for the future!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
First and foremost, I have an Entrepreneurial Spirit!… I constantly seek knowledge from my peers. I’m always open to opportunities. I always go above and beyond for my clients and I’m honored to help others in my industry to succeed as well.

“You only live once, so make sure you leave a good impression!”

I specialize in the luxury real estate arena on both the sell and buy side. I love to negotiate and excel in the marketing of my personal brand, my company along with partnerships and especially my client’s properties!

I have a strong work ethic and it’s not uncommon that I work late hours with my connections to overseas. I tend to think outside the box when problem-solving and marketing so this, I believe gives me an upper hand with my esteem colleagues and adversaries.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Number One Rule – I never take risks especially when it comes to my clients. I’m a Realtor and bound to fiduciary duties.

I do invest in real estate with minimal risk because I have the skills to acquire a successful outcome.
