Check out Ron Katagiri

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ron Katagiri.

Ron, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I am a self-taught artist. I’ve only been here in the US for almost two years now. I was born and raised in the Philippines. I am half Japanese half Filipino. I have always been drawing since I was a kid but only started painting in 2010. I didn’t have money to even buy brushes or paint so I used coffee as my medium back then.

I started painting as gifts to friends and I only ask them to provide art materials for me. I slowly gained enough materials and next thing I knew, I was doing commissioned works for different clients. I have joined several group art exhibitions until I had the honor to host my first solo art exhibit in 2013. I also joined a few competitions back home. One of my works was chosen as a finalist for the nationwide painting competition of the Department of Tourism in the Philippines.

We’d love to hear more about your art.
I consider my art as a combination of contemporary, abstract, expressionism. I like painting people in the most raw, unpolished and abstracted way possible. I like exploring human sexuality, philosophy, psychology and emotions. I appreciate imperfections, grunge and the beauty of human form. I paint to express myself more than impress other people. To me, art is an expression more than anything. Art has become my refuge in the most trying times of my life. I feel like being able to write or paint what you feel has a certain power to ease whatever burden you have been carrying with you. It makes you feel free. Aside from the art of painting, I also love photography and video production. I’d love to produce art documentaries featuring stories of different artists and hopefully be an instrument to inspire others whether it is in the form of painting, illustration, video or photo. More than anything, I hope to inspire people through my work.

What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
Success as an artist, for me, is being able to inspire and ignite emotions or conversations through art. In my opinion, the never-ending pursuit to express emotions and thoughts through art is the most essential characteristic any artist should have. That burning desire to express in whatever shape or form of art is the most important.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I mostly post my works on my Instagram account (@RonKatagiri) or on my YouTube Channel (
