Check Out Porchia Shallowhorn’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Porchia Shallowhorn.

Hi Porchia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in Watts, a place where a lot of people may have negative opinions about. Watts is a place just like in other place in the world, never be ashamed of where you grew up at because it makes you who you are today. Learn to love and be who you are and remember the right people will love you.

My journey with music started about 11 years ago and ever since then I fell in love with writing. Me and my friend Amouri started off forming a group called P.O.E.T.S Ink. P.O.E.T.S stands for People Openly Expressing True Statements. Then we transformed our poetry into music. I’m a Gospel rapper for the purpose of saving souls for Jesus Christ. I have ran across so many people who have changed their music to fit what the world wants, but not me I won’t change who I am to be who I’m not. I record my own music, also I have learnt to mix and master my own music over the years. I’m proud of how far I have came because with all the challenges, I still managed to keep going. In February this year, I have started my record label called Give No Luv Get No Luv Records LLC. I give all glory to God for the process and where I’m at today in my life with music. Without God in my life, I would have gave up on music, God is the one who keeps me going.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There has been many challenges along the way, for instance, one of them is being homeless and using that to put lyrics to songs about how I’ve felt. I’ve learnt over the years that you don’t take what you go throughout on others, you find ways to get over what you have been through. There were days that I was going to college didn’t have a job, Amouri would look out for me and I appreciate her for that. We would be outperforming and the metro would stop running we would have to wait until the trains started back up to get home. Sometimes I use to walk home from certain places 2 or 3 o’clock in the morning because music is my passion. People would come against me too being a female rapper, but I didn’t let nothing stop me. God has had my back through it all and I am forever thankful for that. In August 2012, I went in the hospital to find out my sugar was 1000. I should have been dead and gone, but God has ways of giving us another chance at life to show his goodness in the land of the living. Without struggles, we can’t come across our strengths, so we have to turn pain into power.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I write my own music that God has gifted me to do and I’m forever grateful for that. Being creative is a blessing because not too many people can actually write their own music. I record music, write, rap, sing, mix and master because those are things that God has put in me to manifest into the world we are in. People today need more music that motivates and encourage them to rise higher. People will hit me up asking about buying my music and that makes me feel good. I’m not a people pleaser and what I do is for God. People are really hurting in the world and if I can make a difference in the world that’s a great thing to do.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
During Covid 19, I’ve learnt that you can’t take anything for granted. People are here one day and the next day they are gone, so love people while they are here. Depend on God cause he is the one that’s going to get us through in tuff times as this pandemic.
