Today we’d like to introduce you to Phil Guthrie.
Phil, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I grew up with two CPA’s for parents, and even having a feel for art growing up and into my later high school years, I thought it was a tough route to go to make life with, so I took to the Accounting and Economics route. But it wasn’t even a full year later after studying these subjects I realized it’s not for me. I took all the art classes I could at that school and that thrust me into the decision to move to art school, specifically the Savannah College of Art and Design. This is where I pushed myself out of love for the craft. I partnered with another student, Phil Bichsel, currently design director for a large studio, and we took most of our free time creating projects together and trying to push ourselves to the top of the class and win student awards anywhere we could. Graduating and hitting the market in the 08-09 years was a rough way to start it off, earning small dollars enough to pay for one-way car ride and lunch for the first months of my life in LA and barely hanging in there, I, like in college, kept up the craft and learning new stuff at night, to force myself into a higher position. Fast forward to two years ago, having worked on Feature films like Pacific Rim, Lead compositing and animation on Grammy nominated and VMA winning Music Videos, and Commercials small to large, I had developed the knowhow and skills to manage and create anything most clients would want.
So, I began a small studio in Downtown LA and had two desks. It was a lunge into the world of Business ownership. This was a new hurdle to tackle on its own, and a tough one for an artist’s brain, but having wonderful support systems and the people around me helped get to where we are today in West Los Angeles working on large client projects and we have grown 5X over the last 1 and a half years. My passion is now telling stories as creatively we can to help smaller businesses grow and explore their own potential by creating videos that show the world in 90 seconds what they are and what they can do. It is very rewarding. But as an artist, of course when the big guys come to us, we are flattered to be in the running still as a very young and hungry small shop.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am the creative director / owner of a small boutique creative studio in West Los Angeles, and we create anything animation/design related. We do some live action but are passionate about the Graphics world. This world is a mixture of every medium. We like to think outside the box and stretch our clients when we can to something new and unique. We do mostly create everything on computers but occasionally we get to get our hands dirty and pick up a camera and paper scissors or whatever to experiment with.
I’m inspired by a lot of what I see in my processes. A client who is taking a chance on a video at early stages, a young designer pushing their skills to the limit, or a seasoned veteran sharing their war stories in the studio. It’s all of this combined that keeps me pumping every day. Of course, it’s not all wonder times and fun, but find the golden moments in the process and hold on to them.
I hope people see our work and feel something. If the feeling is curious, anger, love, or anything else, then I feel we have done our job. These artworks are made to evoke emotions to connect someone to the message. The artwork I create with my team is a reflection of myself and the brand I want to create. A colorful playful world of characters or abstract-ness.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
Artists today are surrounded by so much design and art that it sometimes becomes hard to create something truly original. I am all about creating mashups of styles and clients always feel more comfortable with things they have seen, so this all combines to make it harder to be a unique artist. Also, if your trying to create a business in my field, the animation and design arena, the budgets are shrinking, do more with less mentality.
