Check Out Sheila Melody’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheila Melody.

Hi Sheila, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always been passionate about health, wellness and fitness in my personal life, starting with being a cheerleader in high school and then working as a personal trainer at a local women’s club and teaching aerobics at Chicago Health & Racquet Clubs in Aurora, IL where I grew up. I moved to Los Angeles in the early 80’s to pursue my dream to work in the music industry and spent most of my career doing just that; working first for William Morris Agency, then moving into management, publicity, paralegal work with an attorney who did travel and work visas for individuals in the entertainment industry, and project management for a location-based entertainment firm. As a single mom, I opted for a steady paycheck and a schedule that would allow me to be fully present for my son as he grew. After he graduated high school, I decided to get certified in a method of strength training that I had been introduced to – High-Intensity Resistance Training – with the thought of having a side hustle. In 2012 the opportunity arose for me to take over management of a small personal training business that specialized in this very method. I basically jumped in, building this business while still working full time. Over the course of about 6-7 years, I gradually transitioned more and more of my time to be working in my fitness business and soon was able to let go of my old job entirely. Just as we were launching into the best year of our business in early 2020, the pandemic hit. That proved to be a true test of my ability to lead a fitness business through an unprecedented time, and where I reaffirmed how much I truly love working in a field that promotes health, wellness and fitness. Now we are once again focused on growth and I’m so excited for the future of The Strength Code!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has certainly not been a smooth road — especially getting through a pandemic. I learned that there are two types of people in a crisis; those that fall apart, only look at the negative, and give up, or those that look at the crisis as an obstacle that they must conquer. A problem that can be solved. I am the latter. I decided that failure was not an option and thankfully, my team at The Strength Code were on board with me. We jumped into action after the initial shutdown and began to look for solutions. We pivoted our workouts to virtual and at least 20% of our clients joined, then, over the year, more got on board with Virtual or returned to in-person when we were allowed. We masked, sanitized, and kept it to one client at a time. I speak for my entire team when I say that our clients are what gave us the purpose and passion to keep going. We all truly love what we do, and to help our clients stay fit and healthy during a public health crisis, just added fuel to our fire.

Another big surprise I had when I started this business was how much I had to learn about marketing. I started in 2012, and the face of digital marketing has changed significantly since then. I have seen Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and all the other digital platforms grow from being simply entertainment to being essential for any business. My secret weapon is a 20-something Social Media Brand Manager who I met about five years ago. She has helped me to stay relevant and grow with all the digital media changes.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are not your typical gym! At The Strength Code our mission is to provide the highest quality, safest strength training in 30-minute sessions. We believe that strength is the foundation for true health and fitness of mind, body and spirit. Today’s lifestyles are full of busyness and stress, and we provide a place where people can come to get the exercise they need in the time they have. That is the most important difference between The Strength Code and other gyms.

We are a boutique personal training studio working with a foundational method called High-Intensity Resistance Exercise. When we say “high intensity”, we mean how deep this workout goes, which translates into a safe and efficient workout in only half an hour. Most exercise programs work on the theory that more is better. At the Strength Code, our science-based strength training method proves that meaningful exercise paired with adequate recovery time is more efficient. This means you actually gain more by doing less—in 30-minutes, once a week!

Our dynamic, slow-motion, high-intensity workouts are customized for your unique body, health, and fitness goals. We guarantee safe, effective results regardless of your age or pre-existing condition.

Sound too good to be true? Science tells us our muscle fibers need a certain degree of stimulation, or intensity, in order to strengthen and tone muscles and boost metabolism. Our slow-motion, high-intensity resistance workout is one of the most effective and efficient ways for you to achieve all of those benefits.

Your progress is charted during each session and once a month, you’ll receive a comprehensive report from our state-of-the-art, medical-grade Body Composition Analysis machine. This report tells us exactly where and how your body is progressing! Your workouts are adjusted weekly to achieve optimal results.

For each workout, we promise to Make it Quick, Make it Safe and Make it Count so that you can maintain a healthy, strong body no matter how busy your lifestyle is.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
The Strength Code would not be here without my amazing team of Trainers — Ann Kirkland, Joseph Altamirano, Jon Brungardt, Wendy Chamorro and Haley Kahn. All of them are not only specially certified and experienced in what they do, but they truly care about their clients and demonstrate that each day they are working. Without them, I would not have survived the pandemic, and I would not be able to grow my business now. Of course, our clients are above and beyond the most important part of our business, and we are so grateful for each and every one of them. We have some clients who have been with us since the beginning! We love our clients and the community we have created at The Strength Code. This year we are celebrating our 10th Anniversary and plan to throw a party for all our clients!
