Check Out Sallyanne Massimini’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sallyanne Massimini.

Hi Sallyanne, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Born in Connecticut, part of a large American-Italian family, I’ve always loved storytelling and art. Never without my sketchbook, I ended up going to the Maryland Institute College of Art with a focus on painting and drawing.

However, after graduating, I shifted from painter to visual effects artist and supervisor, working on television shows, commercials and movies. Garnering several EMMY VFX nominations, my credits include Fast and Furious, Straw Dogs, True Blood, Fringe, Once Upon a Time, Hemlock Grove and Banshee. Commercial clients include Prada, Target, Dodge Ram, Sunday Night Football, EA, Visa and Mountain Dew.

Through the process, I fell in love with the larger scope and transitioned to directing. My 2nd unit credits and commercial clients include Greenleaf, Imaginary Mary, Step Up, Steadicam, Auctiv and Cosabella.

I was also the Second Unit Director/Producer on Season 3 of American Gods and worked on the Grammy-nominated Billie Eilish movie Happier Than Ever with directors Robert Rodriguez and Patrick Osborne. Most recently, I’ve been developing my own scripts as well as a few other exciting projects that I can’t share just yet!

Along the way, I was fortunate enough to become friends and business partners with Francis Kenny ASC, Richard Crudo ASC and Jarred Land (RED CEO) in Master Cinematographers (MC4), creating some awesome camera inventions. I’ve also never stopped painting. My art can be found at

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think of the film industry as a long, long, long winding road to overnight success. There have been a LOT of hours in the trenches working non-stop, grinding away. But I do believe hard work pays off. And so does following your bliss. I’ve been fortunate have been surrounded by people with shared passion and drive, making this journey filled with fun and love.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
With so many big VFX movies and shows these days, I think my VFX background gives me an edge as a director in terms of understanding what is really needed when we are filming and not being intimidated by that world, enabling me to really use it to its full potential. And also knowing when it’s not needed and to film something practically.

That and… people tend to tell me I have.
Never give up. Follow the path with the heart. That’s what I ask myself before any business decision. Does this path have a heart. If not… there had better be a darn good reason why I’d say yes.
