Check Out Nina Shokrian’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nina Shokrian.

Hi Nina, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Born and raised in Texas, I grew up in my hometown of San Antonio where I currently live with my teenage son and daughter. I’m from a large Hispanic family and one of four girls, raised by parents who taught us to be strong, independent women. My father was one of the first of his family to graduate from college and so my family values education and never took for granted the opportunities we had to attend college and find careers that we were passionate about. At the age of 42, I’ve done a Texas tour first being born in Corpus Christi, growing up in San Antonio, attending college at the University of Texas in Austin and then following a career path that led me to Dallas, San Antonio, Houston and then eventually back to my hometown to stay close to strong family roots and to raise my kids in the family-friendly town of San Antonio. I have a large family who I’m close to and a strong circle of female friends who support me, keep me grounded and remind me every day of who I am at my core. My family and friends are my foundation and I couldn’t be successful without them.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think the biggest challenge in my career has been juggling the role of being a parent with a passion for a career that I’ve loved. It’s gotten easier as the kids have gotten older, but it’s been lots of ups and downs as the balance is constantly evolving and changing. I think in my 20th year of my career I’ve finally figured out how to successfully balance my career with family. But it took a lot of different ingredients to find a successful recipe. My kids are fantastic and supportive and know that I love what I do. I live super close to work and to my kid’s school so it’s easy to come and go as needed. And most of all, a supportive leadership team who also believes in a work-life balance makes it all possible. Marriott truly embraces a work-life family balance and it’s been great to be part of a team that believes in having balance. And therefore, you have a positive, productive work environment. I’m working with a Best in Class team and everyone loves what they do and they are the best at what they do. So I feel I’ve found my people, my community and my home. Because of all these things, I can successfully juggle family & career. And that’s something I’ve worked my entire career to achieve. Work doesn’t feel like work when you love what you do.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I graduated with a degree in Advertising from The University of Texas in Austin. UT had a great communications program that’s still best in class today and I was truly set up for success with amazing internships in radio broadcasting as well as with a popular advertising agency during college. Working in both of these environments sparked my passion for all things advertising – radio, television, film and print and was just launching into my career as Digital Advertising was coming of age.  Most of my career has been working in advertising agencies touching accounts like DreamWorks, Papa John’s Pizza, and Wendy’s Restaurants. Over the years I’ve enjoyed providing marketing consulting services to a variety of businesses. The focus on retail advertising and customer service truly prepared me for my biggest and most favorite role yet as a Senior Marketing Manager with the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa. A beautiful resort set among 600 acres of the Texas Hill Country, 1,002 luxury rooms, a nine-acre waterpark with a 1,100 ft. lazy river, and 268,000 square feet of event space – I’m now managing all things marketing for a living, breathing machine that runs 24/7. It’s been truly fascinating to jump into the world of hospitality and I feel all of my professional experience has led me to a role that truly embraces my personality, experience and talent. Our focus is providing guests with a luxurious resort experience and there’s never-ending opportunities to create new and exciting experiences for our guests. It’s a marketer’s dream to work at a property like this and it’s right in my own backyard here in San Antonio.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I’m passionate about connecting with people & I love to communicate. I’m a social butterfly and could have an engaging conversation with just about anyone. I enjoy connecting people and introducing people. Networking has always come naturally to me. I’m always creating and building relationships with others – whether it’s with neighbors or colleagues. I believe success lies in the details and that when you can bring together people, communicate with each other and pay attention to the details of what makes people tick, you can achieve great things. I think these qualities lend themselves to marketing and you can’t achieve success in marketing without them.  I tend to bring people together, I’m a peacemaker, I’m attracted towards positive energy and I’m often organizing group activities for family, friends and colleagues. I make things happen and don’t shy away from trying something new! I can persuade even the most reluctant and feel I bring positivity and energy to those around me. I believe in building up those around you and setting up people for success. Life can be hard as it is and I feel it’s important to do what we can to make life better and easier for those around us.
