Check Out Michelle Waldman’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Waldman. Them and their team share their story with us below:

The founders of 805 Get Fit, Doug and Michelle Waldman are both Certified Personal Trainers as well as Senior Fitness Specialists, Certified Fitness Nutritional Specialists, and Weight Management Specialists who understand what it takes to get in shape and lose weight in middle age. That’s because they ARE middle-aged!

Since her weight loss, she realized she could teach others what she learned. When Doug, Michelle and their three sons moved to Thousand Oaks, CA in 2010 they began setting up their business. It took five years and we expanded our way from Thousand Oaks down to San Diego, servicing over 15,000 sessions in the ten years we have been in business. We send in-home personal trainers that create custom workouts for all varieties of fitness goals and needs. We help with general fitness, weight loss, pre and post-natal, improve flexibility and balance.

In 2017 we began shifting our focus to an underhelped market of seniors. We realized we can use our skillsets to help those over the age of 60 keep their autonomy and improve their well-being. We have helped senior living facilities take care of their clients to improve their lives and regain their vitality and autonomy. We have helped seniors who have had strokes suffer from ALS, cardiovascular complications, sarcopenia, and many more ailments. On our staff, we have physical therapists, PT aides, kinesiologists, and high level certified personal trainers who can meet the various complex needs of our clients. Our mobile personal trainers come to you and create custom workout plans designed to meet your needs and help you improve over time in a consistent manner.

Our goal is to expand throughout Southern California to improve the lives and well-being through exercise.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We have experienced some growing pains in the past. At our largest, we have had over 300 clients. However, we were receiving most of our clients through Thumbtack at the time. Often times we would win out by explaining why our service was of higher quality and offered more fail-safes than hiring a single trainer off of Thumbtack. Thumbtack changed their marketing model and it became a race to the bottom. A single trainer could probably get by working for $30 an hour, so our price point shifted. This caused our business to shrink substantially. We had to rethink our strategy on marketing, on the type of clients we should focus on, and our geographical footprint. We began rebranding ourself, focusing more on seniors, and regrowing our business.

However; once Covid hit we were also all effectively out of business. Doug and Geordan took jobs within the mortgage industry to keep the family afloat while Michelle focused on the sales and training whichever clients stayed. As Covid became the new normal, it helped us reset and refocus. We found out that people were looking for alternatives to the gym so it gave our company fresh life. We began working with a marketing team and expanded again. We are back to where we were pre-covid and growing fast!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We are an in-home personal training model. It is not uncommon to have an in-home personal trainer, but we are one of the few companies that have multiple personal trainers on staff in each area rather than just a single individual you may work with. You work with the same trainer each time but you have the option to switch to a different trainers if needed or desired. We are also one of the few companies within the fitness space that works directly and regularly with seniors. Seniors are more complex. They often have medicine that we have to understand the contraindications of or ailments that may make exercise more challenging. We often find we work in tandem with their doctors or a physical therapist they are working with. Unfortunately, when working with a physical therapist, insurance covers a handful of sessions and then that is it. There is no continued care or continued conditioning of injured or weak areas. This is where we step in and take over the care. We continue the needed care after physical therapy has ended and work to give a more rounded health and fitness experience.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Since fitness is so central and important to general well-being, we work with a variety of groups. We help with senior living placements, work with physical therapists and doctors. Exercise can mitigate symptoms of many different ailments and improve quality of life across the board. We are always looking for new opportunities to help people in our communities whether it is helping host local cancer survivor events or discussing healthy habits for workers in the corporate world. You can always reach us through our website, as we are always looking to help with local events and collaborate with others.
