Check Out Lizz Henderson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lizz Henderson.

Hi Lizz, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am originally from upstate NY but have lived in LA the past 20 years. In 2006, my husband, Rich, and I started an independent production company called Dancing Silly Productions. For 14 years, we made dozens of short films, feature films, tv series and helped friends create their films.

In 2020, when the pandemic began- we spent a lot of time at home with our then eight years old son, Brixton. We had a lot of time to think about what we really wanted in this life, our one and only life. We asked a lot of questions- why are we here? How can we help? And eventually, we started receiving answers.

Our main goals/manifestations were to travel and make films that matter with our family. We developed an idea that encompassed us traveling as a family, making films that matter and focused around nature. Our idea was Finding Nature’s Heroes. A documentary that showcased all of the people who were saving nature in some way- either by propagating, rewinding, educating, etc.

We wanted to find these people, document their stories and try to inspire the world to care more about nature and our Mother Earth. After a year of research, planning, funding, and mentally preparing- we left LA on August 1st, 2021 – in an RV -for 40 days around the United States. We found and documented dozens of Nature’s Heroes.

We created a YouTube Channel and released a video once a week showing the behind the scenes of us creating this documentary and finding our heroes. You can find our now- 47 videos on Finding Nature’s Heroes YouTube page. We are now in Central America, in Costa Rica, where there is an abundance of nature’s heroes and we are documenting and learning from the indigenous people of CR.

We are consistently learning about what it takes to protect the very little wildlife we have left and trying to inspire others to take action now before it’s too late.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Many, many, many struggles. Covid restrictions for traveling were a giant hurdle that we constantly had to leap over. Finding funding for our journey is a constant struggle and something we work on every day. We take donations through GoFundMe, Patreon and other service platforms.

Pulling our child out of school, having him leave his friends was very hard- as well as us leaving our friends (for now). Figuring out online schooling. How to be travelers, parents and filmmakers at the same time was not easy and something we still have to work on everyday.

Leaving the comfort and security of our jobs, our home and our friends and family was probably the hardest. Going into the unknown and the uncomfortable really tested us (and still tests us everyday)

Traveling to countries where we don’t know anyone, we don’t speak the language and everything is out of our comfort zone- little WiFi, no hot water, bugs everywhere- things we really had to work on!

But In the unknown- is where the magic happens. When we let go of control- and listen to our intuition and do what our heart tells us- that’s where we find the bliss.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I think everything we did this past year – leaving our home, our school, our jobs, our friends and family and going out into the unknown was terrifying and all major risks. We left comfort. We left security. And because of it- we are living our best lives. We are doing what we want. We are doing what our heart tells us. And we are very happy.
