Check Out Lex of Jvbilant Photography’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lex.

Hi Lex, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started photographing weddings when I shot my former babysitters and now close friend’s wedding in my folks’ house back around 2014. It was just such a joyous occasion and I found that it spoke to my skills as a candid photographer–that I have an ability to predict when “moments” are going to happen. With wedding photography, the larger moments–the kiss, the rings, etc.–are often what becomes all-encompassing in photo coverage but I find that when trying to create an accurate portrait of the day it’s the smaller moments–the maid of honor shedding a silent happy tear, a deep hug shared between friends, the strong laugh of someone’s uncle–it’s those moments that underscore how special a day is. That’s why I started — to focus on doing more candid photography for weddings.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s not been smooth by any means, but neither has it been a jagged progression much. Each year, until 2020, I shoot more weddings than my last. 2021-22 is looking to right the ship a bit as well. Though my one pandemic wedding shoot was something of a sight to see, plastic tarps and all!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in a candid style of wedding photography. Where some photographers excel at the posed portraits, I just prefer nabbing the quiet moments with a more understated hand and an eye for details.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Not since college have I had a true mentor. This is a question I would ask of other creatives myself!
