Check Out Kristel Sy’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristel Sy.

Hi Kristel, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Rejoys Handmade like many other new small business started as a quarantine past time. This quickly turned into a newfound passion for me.

I have been working in childcare for about ten years. Although I am able to get my creative juices flowing at work, I had this urge to create things for myself. When we were asked to stay home and quarantine, I knew this was my opportunity to do just that. I made a promise to myself to create or work with two different mediums that I have never tried before. One obviously stuck more than the other and eventually blossomed into this amazing small business. I never knew I would make it this far, but I am so proud of myself for this journey!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In life, we are faced with big and small speed bumps. Running a small business comes with its many challenges trying to find the time and energy to create or being stuck in a creative block are some of my struggles, but the biggest one for me is learning how to overcome imposter syndrome. With the numerous polymer clay businesses out there, it becomes difficult not to continuously critique and compare my designs and success to others. It is challenging to change this mindset, but I am learning more about my confidence and how to exude that into my business, my designs, and my life!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My business is made up of both simple and statement earrings made with polymer clay and lots of love! I mostly cater to those who are not yet comfortable with wearing bigger and bolder earrings, but my goal is to help them step out of their comfort zone. I have found that creating the funkier earrings have sparked a new type of confidence in me. I used to be that person that either never wore earrings or would only wear small studs or small hoops. It wasn’t until I created earrings myself that I pushed out of that comfort zone and now the brighter, bigger, and bolder earrings are my favorite. I hope that more people are inspired by my earrings and find more confidence in their style!

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Taking risks are all part of running a small business. Making the decision to start this small business was a risk within itself. When I first had the idea of wanting to sell my earrings, I was clouded with the questions of whether or not people would actually pay money for what I make. After a lot of “are you sure’s” I finally pulled the trigger and showcased my work to social media. I learned that this risk turned into a beautiful blessing, I was approached with kind words of encouragement and praise. As I go and grow this journey of running Rejoys Handmade, I am given better understanding of the saying, “the greater the risk, the greater the reward”.
