Check Out Junyi Zhang’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Junyi Zhang.

Hi Junyi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Like most children, I like to draw. I enjoyed my time alone. I can cut paper, draw different patterns on it as a doll baby’s dress, and play with that for hours. I noticed small details in the world, enjoying all kinds of exquisite objects. I remember observing a stone full of patterns for an entire afternoon as a primary school child.

This attention to detail has stayed with me throughout the years and allowed me to become a sought-after visual development and background design artist, bringing that unique sense of observation and research to my work. I work as a background designer at Roughdraft Studios for the Futurama project. Rough Draft Studios, Inc. is an award-winning animation studio specializing in traditional and computer animation for television and film.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It is not a smooth road. In Hollywood, there is never a shortage of talents. I need to be the best of the best to be considered.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a visual development and background design artist. In animation, a designer’s job is to build worlds that take viewers into the experience of a location. I specialize in capturing the magic of a place and coming up with the rules to communicate it through the landscape or cityscape or seascape. Like I’m the tour guide, taking audiences on a journey, leading them through the locations. Locations are important for understanding and connecting with a story. I’m good at understanding the places I’m creating and able to mix reality with imagination to bring animated worlds to life and create a magical sense of place.

What are your plans for the future?
I’m planning to learn more about storyboarding. Since I’m developing my own animation Ip. I want to become an animation director. Also, keep drawing the children’s illustration book What Bubu gonna do series.
