Check Out Jenny Karl’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Karl.

Hi Jenny, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a decades-experienced cruelty-free beauty makeup artist and hair stylist based in Los Angeles. I was born and raised in NJ where I started my beauty career at the age of 17 as an artist in the Garden Botanika color studio, where I worked for many years while studying for my Bachelor’s degree at The College of New Jersey.

After graduation, I continued to pursue a career in the beauty industry, working for well-known cosmetics company, MAC cosmetics, while continuing to freelance in Manhattan and Philadelphia.

After an almost 10-year career on the east coast, I moved west to pursue new opportunities in the field of beauty and persevere as a freelance hair and makeup artist in Los Angeles, specializing in Airbrush Foundation, Beauty, HD for Print, Film & Television, Fashion, Special Event, and Men’s Grooming.

After over 2 decades in the industry, as an expert in my field, I’ve written for the health and beauty sections of numerous publications and blogs, as well as hosted a makeup how-to series for I also specialize in artist training and have worn a co-producer hat, joining forces with writer David Barry to bring to life award-winning YouTube series, Tinsel’s Town!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Nothing in life is a smooth road… Many obstacles along the way I have made me a stronger person and a better artist 🙂

Moving to LA from the East Coast definitely post some challenges… Money… Traffic… just to name a few:)

I grew up on a small farm in New Jersey that my grandparents purchased in the 1940s after immigrating from Germany through Ellis island. As a child, I never dreamed of being a makeup artist. However, I would watch soap operas with my mother, who was a hairstylist, and I would dream of going to Hollywood… Thinking back, this probably really influenced my career path without even realizing it:)

Starting my career over in a new city after being on the east coast for all those early years was harder than I thought, and it took me a couple years to adapt. But now, after a decade and a half of being in this city… I really feel at home, and my career is thriving.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in airbrush foundation & I also do both hair styling and makeup… I think that sets me apart in the industry — as well as the fact that I have such a strong work ethic and a passion for my career. I feel so fortunate to be able to do this job and have so much fun and support myself at the same time.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
When I was starting out, there was no YouTube or Instagram. I had to learn with hands-on experience without having a video tutorial. My Bible was the Kevin Aucoin books. I would practice on my friends and family, and clients by using KA’s advice on technique and color — and then using my intuition and curiosity. I urge artists that are just starting out to do the same and create their own style:)
