Check Out Janine Schoonover’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janine Schoonover.

Janine, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m a thirty-two years old mother of two and the creator of The Studio Coop. I never really felt like I had a passion to do something —let alone artistically—, until I had children. The Studio Coop came to be when I had my first child, Cooper. I wanted nothing more than to be able to spend every day with him. I thought of every way possible to be able to work from home, and after having spent twelve years in retail, I wanted something different. Then I found clay, and it lit a fire of creativity in me.

Everyday I look forward to making new things (especially when my children are napping). I have also expanded my artistic endeavors beyond clay earrings to include other mediums (acrylic, wood, leather)with the help of my glowforge laser machine. When I’m not in my workshop, I enjoy being outdoors with my family doing things like camping, taking trips to the beach, and hiking.

I am grateful for everyone who supports my small business. In doing so, you not only support me but my family as well. Never in a million years did I think that I would be able to call myself an artist and a small business owner, but here I am, thanks to all of my lovely and amazing supporters.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The Studio Coop has been a two years process. It was only made more difficult to succeed because of being pregnant while also raising my very young son, most of which has been during Covid.

There was a lot of stress from being a tired mom, trying to make money at Markets while things were being shut down, and of course the juggling of finances and my regular job’s work schedule.

Learning to balance time and creating a quality product has been quite a learning process with small failures along the way.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Studio Coop started off with polymer clay jewelry and accessories. I mostly make earrings and even expanded into making some clay wall hangings and even car essential oil diffusers. I recently have expanded my business to include laser cut designs in acrylic to make statement earrings (usually with a vintage flair) and customized business items.

I am most proud of my eclectic style. I feel like I create pieces that reflect how my brain thinks, and that tends to be a little all over the place. I think I make a variety of things that someone could find something that they like. I like to think that my earrings are for every lobe.

What makes you happy?
My greatest joy is being able to be home with my kids. I love that I am able to create something that people love, so much so that they want to buy it. This shared joy ( my love of creating and other’s love of my product) keeps me home with my kids and that brings me the most happiness.
