Check Out Foliage LB’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Foliage LB.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
We are David and Nicoletta and we are the owners of Foliage LB, your local queer-owned plant shop that opened its doors in November 2020.

Foliage LB started with a simple desire to connect our Long Beach community to affordable, healthy plants. As two plant parents ourselves, we understood the positive impact that plants could bring to all people. Not only as a healthy hobby but as a passion for others to connect on. We also understood that during our own plant journey, house plants did not feel accessible and learning how to care for these plants seemed like even more of an obstacle. We set out to offer a safe space for people to develop a healthy relationship with plants – leading with education, access, and affordability. When you shop with us, we are determined to empower you to be the best plant parent you can be.

More than plants, we value community. We found out quickly that although plants are where our passions started, the community that surrounded house plants is where our biggest sense of joy came from. Watching people purchase their first plants, grow their collection, overcome plant obstacles, and connecting with each visit – is one of our most valued experiences. We truly hope to offer a safe and welcoming space for all.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
A beautiful journey, yes. Smooth road, not exactly- but this journey we’ve been on has been one of the most rewarding experiences of our lives. Something that could not have happened without the support of our community.

Opening our doors in 2020 was both exciting and extremely terrifying. We were unsure about a lot and had no promise that this was a good idea. Coming from different professional backgrounds, David with his education in physics and Nicoletta coming from a background in psychology… we did not have any idea on how to start a business, but we had a common goal of wanting to create space in Long Beach that empowered our community. We tailored our strengths and buckled down to create our own slice of botanical heaven, to share, that is Foliage LB.

With our own struggles in establishing ourselves along the way, we are always happy to share our journey and empower others to create those spaces that you needed or wanted at one-time in your life. As a queer-owned, POC, small business it was important for us to create a welcoming space that not only accepted but empowered our own communities. We collaborate with and focus on supporting other local small businesses. Always leaning into the idea that community always comes over the competition.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We are a plant shop that focuses on tropical indoor plants. House plants are our means of connecting to you all, but ultimately community and human connection is our specialty.

In all things we do, we hope to empower and uplift. Whether that be with our customers, by sharing knowledge and access to plants or uplifting other plant shops in our city. We have been lucky enough to connect with plant shops like Pippi + Lola, All Time Plants, Vida Plants, Planted By Yours Truly, Peacock & Co., and so many more that are willing and happy to extend a hand of kindness and uplift each other. We often collaborate with each other to provide Long Beach with a connected community experience. That is something we are extremely proud of.

While there are so many amazing plant shops, we hope what sets us apart is our relationship to our community and customer care. Always offering support in any way we can. We truly want the best for our plants and our people.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
We are so much more than plants and we would love to explore any and all outlets of connection! Simply come in, or reach out and we’d be happy to make something happen!

We currently offer floral services, plant rentals, plant sitting, installs, maintenance and community organizing but are always looking to expand.

We also offer shipping nationwide, so if you’re not in Long Beach to shop in store, we would love to send you a slice of our heaven and start your plant journey!
