Check Out Elana Pruitt’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elana Pruitt.

Hi Elana, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I pride myself in being an online vegan resource for all, or as I like to consider — a vegan inspirer. But I wasn’t always full of pride and confidence. For many years, I quietly struggled with identity issues and low self-esteem, never truly trying to fit into the norm or popular crowds (even when I secretly sorta wanted to).

For more than a decade, all through my 20s and early 30s (I’m now 41)…I wrote about fashion. I found such joy and strength in writing about the concept of style and how it expresses who we are. But over time, I was ironically losing my sense of Self. Or, rather, realizing that I felt completely void of it. In stiletto heels and fitting blazers, I’d interview designers one on one, sit at fashion week shows totally in awe of the models who strutted down the runway, and then chain smoke to deal with the adrenaline rush. Most of the time, my self-esteem would actually heighten as I wrote about the bold and the beautiful when I rubbed shoulders with those I used to have posters of in my teenage room, and of course when my editor praised me. Yet at the end of it all, in reality, living behind the computer screen made it very easy to fall into a slump of despair. “I will never look like that model! Why won’t my hair look like that? I bet they’ll never remember that I wrote about them…”

Eventually, after a few career shifts and amidst my own personal style evolution (growing locs), ethical lifestyle transformation (going vegan), and gaining a completely new identity (becoming a mother)…my values changed. Writing about the OUTER (i.e., fashion looks and where to shop for hot style) was no longer stimulating because I began to realize the importance of focusing more on the INNER. Something I never really took the time to do.

I used to carry the philosophy that when you look good, you feel good. But the real flex is when you FEEL good, you look good!

So in 2017, I crowned myself as “Cool Vegan Mama” on social media very shortly after giving birth to my son (now almost five years old!). And my purpose became clearer than ever! I knew that I had to shed light on veganism as it directly pertained to me being mama bear of a Black vegan family and share the health and wellness knowledge I’ve gained simply from my own experiences. I began to open up and connect with the world by sharing vegan recipes, doing product reviews, creating how-to videos, and ultimately showing that an ethical lifestyle is super-cool (contrary to popular belief).

During summer 2021, as my family and I really became daily juice enthusiasts, I decided to create a business venture out of it. I was quickly inspired to launch “Mama’s Fresh Juices” as a way to help elevate others’ physical, mental, and spiritual health (because we were experiencing this shift!). Soon thereafter, friends of friends of friends began to experience my homemade juices and I quickly felt my purpose gain new momentum. There is such satisfaction knowing that my work — my passion — is contributing to a person’s energy and overall health. Whether someone is detoxing or simply wants to incorporate freshness into their everyday lives, my juices help make people smile and feel grateful for being alive! I mean, as a small business owner, what else can I ask for?!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a content creating mama who works from home…the struggle has always been in regards to time management. Just where do the hours go?! One day, I’d love to have an assistant to help with admin work, to help keep me organized…to help chop up fruits and veggies and keep my fridge immaculate! But until then, I keep things moving and work when I can and how I can. It’s not uncommon for me to finish a post as I’m flipping my son’s pancakes!

With that being said, I’m learning that sometimes, just sometimes, I need to put my phone down and enjoy some much-needed rest. After all, how else will I truly have the energy to produce content, produce delicious juices, and provide stimulating learning and playtime experiences with my son if I’m running on E?

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a niche social media content creator (Cool Vegan Mama) and small business owner (Mama’s Fresh Juices), I believe that I’m known for my authentic, ethical, gratitude-filled, and self-loving personality. I mean, I hope that’s what I’m known for. 😉 My passion for health and wellness motivates me to provide valuable CONTENT, such as super-simple recipes, self-love support, and natural skincare features, as well as a valuable PRODUCT, such as an electrifying, natural juice made with beets, tangerines, carrots, and lemon! Ultimately, there’s nothing better than when someone reaches out to me to say that I’ve inspired them in one way or another. Because, in turn, they uplift me and inspire ME to continue growing as a creative professional.

How do you define success?
Inner peace. Once you have that…anything is possible.
