Check Out Catherine Elhoffer’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Catherine Elhoffer.

Hi Catherine, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Everything we do starts with me hand-making all my designs in my living room on my home sewing machines.

After being fired from my full-time job at a licensed geek fashion company I decided to make my dream of making high-end geek-inspired apparel a reality.

Tired of screen-printed logos and poor craftsmanship, I handcrafted garments out of luxurious textiles and used clean lines and color-blocking to make a finished piece that quickly found a following.

I consider myself plus-sized and I was tired of fast fashion pieces not fitting my body, so I designed for fat girls like myself.

I opened up for orders on the first of every month and would shut down orders within two days to start fulfilling the demand, but when my work grew too demanding I reached out to local factories here in Los Angeles to expand my designs.

That grew to the company you see now. I stopped taking custom orders nearly 5 years ago, though I still sew and make samples for product development or orders for friends and celebrities alike.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There are always struggles with production and development but the pandemic really shifted the way we did business.

Between factory shutdowns, textiles, cost increases, and even the ability to get quality materials was challenging not to mention the struggle of now an entirely remote team and trying to do a shoot with models in 1:1 settings.

We lost all ability for in-person events for two years and had to adapt to meet our customers where they were and also modify business practices to keep doing what we love.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We are known for high-quality, geek fashion apparel inspired by fandoms we love.

I make what I want and hope my customers love it! The fact we’re an all-female-owned and operated business, with sizes XXS-4xl, as well as the fact everything we do is local really sets us apart. There’s no one else really doing what we’re doing.

We don’t have another major brand backing us, we don’t have major licenses, and we are entirely funded by our fans and their love for all things geek apparel.
