Check Out Brandi Fields’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandi Fields.

Hi Brandi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a licensed Cosmetologist and Entrepreneur from Centerville/Cahokia, IL. I started styling and cutting hair has a kid, it was like second nature to me. I started out doing it just because I knew how and I was great at it. My big brother taught me how to cut hair, and from then I started styling and cutting my own hair. I’d practice on myself to perfect my skills. The more and more I practiced, the more and more I fell in love with my craft. I then started to style friends and family. I think I loved cutting hair more than styling hair. The art of cutting and creativity was so DOPE to me. I set out to be one of the best female barbers around. I wanted to open the first ALL FEMALE BARBERSHOP, which that’s still on my goal list, but God had other plans, Gods plan for me was far greater. I just didn’t know it at the time. I started working in salons without being licensed, I mean that wasn’t a priority to me at the time because I just wanted to be a stylist. As I grew mentally, my clientele also grew and so did the needs of my clients. I had clients who had real issues like alopecia, chronic hair loss, breakage and when they asked me for recommendations, I couldn’t be of any help because I wasn’t licensed. So I said to myself if hair is what you love then I need to go get properly educated. I enrolled in Cosmetology school and when I graduated that was a game-changer for me. I continued my education by attending classes for hair loss, installing male hair units, learning the technique of eyelash extension application, becoming a microshading technician. Whatever my clients were in need of, I got certified in it. As the needs of my clients grew, so did I. I left the salon where I was renting a booth and opened my own salon Brandi Michelle Unique Cuts and Styles.

My brand name is Brandi Michelle, “QUEEN BEE”, “THE BEE” was born. I wanted my brand to represent me. I am the face of my brand so I wanted the name to showcase CLASSY, UNIQUE, CHIC, DIFFERENT, and EXCELLENCE. That’s what Brandi Michelle is. So after I would style my clients, I would say “THEY GOT STUNG BY THE BEE” and that became my slogan, my hashtags. That’s what I became.

I was able to service my clients and meet their needs in an environment they felt comfortable. Learning all the new services, I was able to implement them at my salon. I also started to teach other stylists and barbers what I had learned and mastered. I branched out to other cities like Dallas, Chicago, Arlington, Vegas to teach. I love being able to educate others on the things that was taught to me. I want Brandi Michelle to become a legacy, no Brandi Michelle WILL become a legacy. I want to create more lanes for the young entrepreneurs coming up behind me. My passion for hair goes beyond the chair.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly, it was a pretty smooth road for the most part. I mean outside of dealing with everyday life issues, and things like clients coming and going, and the messiness of the salon drama. I just learned how to look pass it, push forward, and stay focused.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in Natural Hair. I do traditional locs, microlocs, lashes, and microshading eyebrow services. I offer other services as well. I am known for my versatility in being a stylist and barber. I am able to service all walks of life, men, women and children. I love to see the smiles and joy in people after I give them the mirror and they see themselves for confidently. Being able to give someone hope after being lost for so long is a blessing. I was blessed with a gift. Some do it for the money, but I DO IT because I have passion for hair and love for making people feel beautiful and helping them bring back the confidence they once had. My clients become family. God uses me to bless others through my gift he blessed me with. That makes my heart overflow with joy and happiness.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Soooo I definitely know about taking risk. When I was renting a booth and even after opening my salon, I was working a 9-5. I felt like I needed that security cushion of income while trying to build my brand…and I did. That extra money was love. But in reality, it was hurting me more than helping me. I was losing money not being at the salon full time and missing time with my family being at the salon all night. So my business suffered and I lost time with my family. I had some decisions to make. I was afraid of not knowing if the income would be there if the clients will come if I was going to make it if my salon would fold. I had a bunch of what ifs. Negatively thinking, but I wasn’t thinking. I started saying what if I leave the 9-5, I will be able to be at the salon full time and my clients may be doubled. What if I had more time with my family and less nights at the salon. There’s no risk without sacrifice right. So I let go of that security cushion, stepped out on faith, took that risk and trusted God. That was the best decision I could’ve ever made. I’ve learned that taking risk and accepting failures are apart of the growth and success process.
