Check Out Asia Vo’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Asia Vo.

Hi Asia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
At a young age, I discovered the experience of making images and how it taught me that making work remakes me as much as I make it.

I’m interested in unlearning the world we built for ourselves through the lenses of those in power. Our teachers, our parents, history, religion. This is why I like photography as it is a direct reflection of reality but still has this dichotomy as truth is also interpretation. I watch a lot of anime and read a lot of fiction and mythology. There’s a pattern that these stories have as it’s the constant search of men and women for meaning, significance, and understanding the unknown. These stories are the clues to finding, maybe not necessarily the meaning of life but the experience of being alive. I treat making work as an adventure.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Yes and no. Takes a lot of living to get to this point. I had to convince my immigrant parents to go into this field and trust me. Also had to figure out the world of film and all the little categories. But I’ve always loved making videos and I’m lucky to have found that so early in my life.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I make immersive video and sound pieces that capture the magical moments of life alongside the inconveniences and place these moments in a surreal environment. I utilize familiar sights and sounds that allow the viewer to connect and make space for these small moments in our fast-paced world. The characters I use in my pieces are all anonymous while feeling familiar and there is a sense of search and struggle for something that isn’t physical, which is funny because video isn’t physical.

My process usually starts with an idea and develops in post-production.

I have made work on my attempt to fly, I’ve recorded the sound of ants, I’ve made a rock, created my own origin story.

My dream is to fly.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
One piece.
