Check Out Annie Connors’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Annie Connors.

Hi Annie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am the Trap Queen. When it comes to making candles, I’ve been doing this for 23 years. My grandmother raised me & at the age of eight, she purchased my first candle-making set. I thank God for my grandma always nurturing my talents. From violin, drama production, science club, & drill team I did it all. My grandma never told me I couldn’t. I actually have a fascination with fire, I think it’s beautiful & as far as candles I always had anxiety growing up, aromatherapy was a great way of coping. As I got older, I literally would buy a ridiculous amount of candles & have them in my closet waiting for when I ran out. Financially it was getting expensive because I refused to buy cheap candles that didn’t have a strong scent. I actually was working as an insurance adjuster when the pandemic hit. My company fired me as they were trying to mitigate their losses during the pandemic. The less employees you have the less you have to pay. I was actually in the process at the time of starting my own business because the pandemic created so much uncertainty. I almost got discouraged my business was set to launch on my grandmother’s birthday in October, it was September and I didn’t have a job. I told myself don’t worry this is why you started a business & you have to launch it.

Literally, one month later I had found a new job & I launched my business. Here we are just a year later & it has been thriving. I named my company “The Candle Trap”. Hip hop culture is such a huge part of my life & the Trap symbolizes the struggle. Each candle name is a reference & tribute to the trap culture. I actually have a distribution deal with a big client whose name I will not mention for privacy reasons. Every few weeks, we host candle-making classes where you can come have drinks & craft your very own candle with a fragrance of your choosing. I honestly enjoy the pop-up shops the most, just being out connecting with the people. I absolutely love what I do & for me, it’s like therapy making candles. This has been an amazing year & I’m excited for all the things to come. When I was a kid, when I would go up & accept awards or give a speech, I’d always thank my grandma. Once again, I have to thank her for sewing the seeds. I will never be able to thank her enough. She is no longer here in the form of flesh but in heaven in the form of an angel. I just hope I make her proud!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Losing my job in the process of starting a business was a huge disappointment & very discouraging. I was so scared and nervous. It takes money to make money yet I didn’t have any coming in. I literally had to rely on my savings & a few prayers because honey, it was a mess.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an all-around creative & artistic soul. In my free time, I write poems & meditate. I’m actually an insurance adjuster. When it comes to coordinating, delegating, & getting things done I’m your girl. When it comes to my family or friends, if they wanna know how to do something, find something, or set an itinerary, I am the person they call. When I’m not helping people, I enjoy being with the animals. I am really into alligators right now, my favorite show is “ Swamp people”. Funny because my grandma is from Alabama & my grandfather is from Texas where they also hunt gators. I’m a city girl, but I definitely got the country in my heart. I love nature & hiking. One day I hope to own my own farm.

What does success mean to you?
To me, success is when your vision is complete. When the things you dream of become reality & you become an inspiration to others. When your able to then help & uplift others, then I believe you’re a success!
