Today we’d like to introduce you to Anja Meyer.
Hi Anja, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Born and raised in Germany, it all just started as a hobby modeling for a photography workshop at university. The more experienced I got, the more joy it brought me and so I decided to pursue it as a career. I have modeled in Germany, Australia, Singapore and Canada for fashion e-commerce, catalogues, and lifestyle brands, including Lug Bags, Ukiyo Co yoga clothing, Singapore Airlines and many more. With the pandemic causing less workload in modeling, I put most of my energy and focus into creating content for a social media app called Bigo Live, contracted by a modeling agency. I joined in March 2019 but only since the pandemic in March 2020 in full force and focus, gaining popularity through large events on the platform. Last month, in July 2022, currently based in Toronto, Canada, I got flown into the US and awarded “Champion of North America” in Paramount Pictures in Hollywood for the BIGO Awards Gala 2022. This award is probably my biggest success to date.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think it takes confidence, discipline and resilience. The high fashion industry has specific industry standards in terms of measurements and often times also age. I got rejected more times at auditions and castings than I got booked. It took me some time to understand that that is absolutely normal and it is important to not take it personal. I learned over time that there are lots of different modeling markets and I fit in more in the commercial market. A sense of a business mindset is important and when I started, I wasn’t always as organized with bookkeeping like keeping track of client invoices, etc. I’ve lived and worked in several countries, for example in Singapore I experienced some cultural and language barriers, it’s crucial to always be curious, to adapt and learn. When the pandemic hit, all my booked shoots and castings got canceled and it was terrifying. At this time I only made a small part-time income from the app Bigo but I hustled and was able to grow my success in app to be able to make it a full-time income.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
The majority of my expertise is performing in numerous videos and commercials for prestigious brands like Siemens, HP laptops, and Razer. As a hairstyling model, I worked at various hair education events for ghd hair and Oribe hair, with celebrity hair artists including Michael Beel, Alan White, or Joey George.
I also enjoy working with photography students and have been a model in various photography workshops with established photography teachers like Matt Granger or Peter Coulson. Often I gave the photographers ideas about lighting and camera angles and we both explored various concepts as a team. I’m also holding a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design which gives me a good understanding about advertising ideas, concepts, and photography.
Last month, in July 2022, I won the award Champion “Top 1 Broadcaster of North America” at the iconic Paramount Pictures in Hollywood for the BIGO Awards Gala 2022. This award is probably my biggest success to date. I placed in 2 Gala Awards before, winning Global Host 2020 Shining Star Top1 and Global Host 2021 Popular Division Top2 in the annual global Bigo Awards Gala. But due to Covid-19, those were held entirely virtually, so I felt absolutely blown away and honored to be flown into the US to accept my award on the stage of the iconic Paramount Pictures in Hollywood. This is more special and feels like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The transition from a virtual in-app live to a real live success.
What matters most to you? Why?
Teamwork is very important, I am not the person to persuade someone of my own thoughts, however, I enjoy sharing my own ideas for consideration. I believe together much more can be achieved. I strive to progress, setting goals and working towards them while growing together as a team.
