Check Out Amanda Barba’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Barba.

Hi Amanda, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My sisters are cosmetologists so always told me how good I was at doing hair and I should go to cosmo school so it wasn’t until I was older I decided to check it out and as soon as I saw what the programs were about I was fascinated with barbering so I enrolled same day. I saw a girl braiding hair and I wanted to learn so bad, she gave me the concept and I bought myself a doll head and watched braiding videos for months until I got it. I was braiding everybody and anybody that would let me. I started braiding hair at the barbershop I gained clientele pretty fast.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was hard to go to barbering school because I’m a mother of four and had a full-time job at the time so I had to attend night school. There were days that I was so tired and wanted to give up but the next day I was right back at it. Covid also made it difficult to get my name out there for a while because I got my license during the shutdown process.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I cut men’s hair and braid. But I’m known mainly for my braids, I take my time with each person to give them quality and a good experience.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I took a risk on changing the career I knew for so many years in the apparel industry to do something completely different. I am so glad I did because I love what I do.
