Check Out Alyssa Lizarraga’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Lizarraga.

Hi Alyssa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My mother has been a huge inspiration for how I started. She would photograph me and my siblings (My twin and younger brother) with this Pentax film camera. I always remember her carrying it around and photographing special moments. She eventually would print them and put them in a photo album. These photo albums are so special because we were able to relive our lives through them as we got older!

When I turned 17, I got my first DSLR camera. I remember wanting to photograph everything! I enrolled in an adult school in my city and learned the basics of film, photoshop, and lighting.

After shooting a bit of everything, I started wanting to shoot more fashion photography so I would find models and makeup artists to collaborate with me on Model Mayhem(back in the day before Instagram was so popular.)

A photographer from a different city saw my work and asked me to photograph a wedding with her! At that point in my life, I had only been to one wedding. I was so excited and nervous. I’m sure the images did not come out great but from that moment on, I fell in love with weddings. I remember finishing the wedding day and just dreaming of photographing weddings all the time.

I really starting viewing life differently when I became a single mom a few years ago. Moments in time became much more meaningful. I view the world differently and how I capture is really to leave something behind for future generations to share our stories.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
In my ten years of photographing weddings, I’ve been challenged a lot. It has made me grow as a woman in so many ways. Not everyone believed that I could make it in this industry and that it wouldn’t be as successful financially. I’ve dealt with sexism a lot, ESPECIALLY when I first started at an 18 years old girl.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I really love connecting with people. Learning about their lives and being an encouragement to them. I think that’s what really makes me a great wedding photographer. Making people feel comfortable and able to be vulnerable around me is key. I create a safe space with my genuine care of whoever is in front of my camera while also providing great direction and feedback. It’s more that snapping photos to me.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Back when I gave birth to my son, I had a pelvic aneurysm. I thought it was going to be my last day. My child went to the NICU and I, by a miracle, had a successful operation to save my life. This changed my life. I don’t take anything for granted.

I spent the next year recovering and falling in love with my kid and prepping myself. God really blessed me with more life!
