Today we’d like to introduce you to Alissa Portillo.
Hi Alissa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Before the pandemic of COVID-19 had initially hit, I was a junior entering my senior year in high school when I began to experience physical bodily pain, to the point that I had to be taken to the hospital for the pain. Being in the hospital with not being able to eat or drink basically anything except be attached to IV’s for food left me very much emotionally and physically drained. During my stay in the hospital, I found out I had gallstones and was practically being pushed to get surgery and remove the stones or it would worsen for me in the future. Me being eager to just end my pain and leave the hospital, I wanted to undergo surgery. However, my parent felt I could tackle a more holistic approach to this issue with cleaner diets and trying different home remedies to help clear my body of the stones. So, when I was released from the hospital, I began to change my diet and began to expand my horizons on yoga and meditation. After months I felt meditation and yoga were beginning to leave a big impact on my body and mind. It was during this time that I was introduced to sound baths through Youtube. Sound baths are beneficial for both the body and mind so I began to listen to sound baths more often and meditate to them.
Soon, I wanted to purchase my own singing bowl for my benefit in person because I simply felt connected to trying it on my own. So I purchased a small singing bowl during the COVID-19 pandemic because this was the time I felt even more connected to meditation and yoga. A few months passed still during the pandemic, that I decided to purchase a whole set of seven bowls and begin deepening my connection to sound baths and meditation. I soon created a space on Instagram for my sound baths where I would post weekly small sound baths for others to enjoy as well. Then I began getting recognition and people seemed to be enjoying it and that started me off on my sound bath journey and business. A few months later, I was asked to be a part of an event in person (still during COVID-19 so we continued to be cautious) and since then a whole two years later I have continued to create spaces for sound bath meditations events both in person and online. Although I do not post weekly sound baths anymore like I did before, my journey with in-person events and collaborations with other holistic healers/practitioners and market/pop-up spaces have been incredible!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As any small business owner, you experience many difficult scenarios and it is no different with me. As a small business owners, we are our own scheduler, planner, marketer, boss, and creators. We are constantly doing everything mostly by ourselves behind the scenes and many times I know I’m not the only one to experience this; sometimes we experience disappointments. There are some sound bath events I create that are filled up and sold out but in others, I only have one or no sign-ups and have to cancel an event so I feel disappointed and not enough. Sometimes, I get no one-on-one appointments for months except for one every few months. We also compare ourselves to others who are in the same business we are in and who are succeeding way more than ourselves. So most of the time it feels we are struggling internally with our thoughts of ourselves or our capabilities with our business but other times you will see the struggle of making a sale, appointment, and booking that can impact you in ways no one understands…
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a sound bath facilitator. This means that I am a facilitator of sound baths which are essentially an extension of meditation using a variety of different musical instruments that provide a relaxation and meditative experience. I use singing bowls, rainsticks, chimes, tuning forks, and more which all contribute to different benefits for the body and mind. I am a curator of meditative spaces where I form events and collaborate with other holistic healers/practitioners.
What matters most to you?
My happiness and mental health matter to me. For someone who did not care for my emotions and health prior to now being one who cares for my own mental health and will do anything to make myself happy I will do it. If my mental health and heart yearn for a day off of work or school I will do it. If I want to take time to read or watch tv all day, I will do it. If I want to go outside in nature and simply walk or bring my singing bowls with me to play, I will. My happiness and mental health matter so much to me.
