Check Out Al Thornton’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Al Thornton.

Hi Al, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
This all started as a venture for my mother. During the pandemic, I was thinking of my mom going big on social media with her tasty cheesecakes, so I ran it by her & she gave it a try. We started on December 23rd, 2020 and she made nine of her Original Cheesecakes, Caramel Pecan. She cooked them & I advertised & promoted them. We sold out that night! Received great feedback and new orders that very night. Woke up & informed my mom we had to make 11 more cheesecakes for new & repeat orders. She baked them & I delivered them that night without realizing what I may have started. The next following day is Christmas, and I woke u to 13 separate orders from people, some of which I didn’t know the person at all.

I realized at that moment, this can truly be something big. I called my mom to make more cakes on Christmas Day and she told me that she’s tired and for me to are that cakes. I pulled out a pencil and paper and proceeded to write her recipe down. From there, I’ve come up with 36 different cheesecakes & other cheesecake infused treats! So I owe all of this to my mom!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all, & I didn’t think it was to be honest. In the beginning, it was dealing with the demand, and that came with honing the process of making so many at once and perfecting the recipe. After some time, it became the notion of operating as a legit business & doing things with due diligence & representation. I also had to learn how to differentiate shelf from others in my category & make different cheesecake items.

Transitioning to pop up events was most definitely the epitome of them all. It’s been a learning process every time I attend one, and every time I get better as I go.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I make some of the best cheesecakes! I also specialize in baking treats with cheesecake in the mix! I’m known for being the “cheesecake man” as some will say, and some have coined the “Cheesecake King” which I reckon is a bit much, but anything relative to the identification of my products is gratifying for me.

I’m most proud of the reactions & feedback I receive from customers after they taste my products. It’s a great feeling when someone regards something that you create & hold dear, as some best of its kind that they had. Several people compare to mine of that brands out there, & then they end up becoming outside customers for the most part.

The one thing that sets me apart from others is that I’m a “unicorn” so to say. When I tell people that I’m a baker with 36 cheesecakes & do customs & have other treats, they almost instantly laugh & reiterate my statement with a question like, “You’re a baker?” Or “You know how to make cheesecakes? Your mom or girl making them huh?” So, that’s when I can showcase them with what my passed down to me

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I liked to be the center of attention. Always had eyes on me, & wanted attention. Now an adult, I’m more laid back & reserved, but I know how & when to flip a switch to make people gravitate towards me. Always been goofy & viewing the humor in many situations. I’ve grown up interested in different things. Ever since I was younger, I’ve had a deep admiration with science, and that grew to an obsession with geology and me going to college to study geology & geophysics. I collect minerals & gems in my spare time. My science background plays a big part into my baking of cheesecakes. After all, baking is a science.
