Today we’d like to introduce you to Nova Zef.
Nova, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I was born a visionary. I remember as a child staring at my ceiling for about an hour a day watching the white cracked wall turn into pictures. I remember how many times I faked being sick at school just so I can come home and play with all my toys and go into my own little world pretending I was a witch casting spells. I remember when I played with the boys on the block wanting to fit in because even as a child I wanted to share that being a strong woman is something to be proud of. I grew up in Rochester New York and skipped college and moved directly to New York City. I knew that experience is how I learn. I started a dance company, worked as a makeup artist and fashion designer while going to acting classes. I went to one audition and decided that I want to audition for myself and not others. I did some soul searching and traveled west on a big blue school bus with friends and started writing poetry. After growing up in a small-minded box, I made some discoveries about the truth of the world. I decided that I wanted to execute my conscious breakthroughs through music. I learned that I am on a mission to share the truth this lifetime around through my words and vision.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am a mc. I work independently with different music producers from around the world and also created a band called Pendulum People. I perform my songs live as well as create my own music videos. My live show with my team is filled with characters, synchronized movement as well a unique storyline telling. The beats I like to work with are usually very bass heavy. Some have described my work to be very similar to Missy Elliot. I speak about women empowerment as well as current political issues happening around the world. I would describe my sound as ancient mixed with future. I usually begin recording by speaking gibberish to the beat into the microphone and then I take the gibberish and follow the rhythm flow and vowel sounds and turn it into a masterpiece. Sometimes I write while I’m walking through the streets and record it and offer the language to producers to create a beat around it. When I make my own music videos, I usually have a vision and follow it and figure out how to make it logistically happen with a 0 budget. The message I offer is usually hypnotizing. I am really into creating lyrics sharing secret lessons that I am have learned that hopefully would come up in someone else’s journey in time as they grow. This offering to earth isn’t for me. It’s for the overall survival of earth. Waking up means way more than trending peace and love. It’s about looking deep into your roots and seeing where we were trained wrong as humans and how to re-evaluate and move forward with change.
How can artists connect with other artists?
My advice to connect with other artist is get off of your cell phones and go shine your light and art with your spirit. Also, embrace your aloneness. You chose this. You come into the world alone and you die alone.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
You can see my work on Instagram, @novazef or on YouTube, and performing at festivals around the world. You can listen through all major music platforms. Spotify, iTunes, etc. You can support my work by spreading the word. Also connecting me with people that would have interest in helping me grow so I can share with as many people as possible. You can also support me by buying my merch to fund my next creation.
