Today we’d like to introduce you to Nina K Cullen.
Nina, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Born in Croatia, at an early age I knew that my life would follow in the direction of art, design, and fashion. I studied in Switzerland and London at the American College of Design. My fashion illustrations were featured in several of London’s trendy publications. After completing my studies, I moved to New York City where I achieved success as a fashion designer with my own “Nina K” clothing line. The fashion world embraced my designs and I won the “Rising Star Award” from the National Fashion Associations in the 90’s. The label took off and my clothing was soon in the fine stores coast to coast. Many leading fashion magazines including Vogue, Glamour, Bazaar, featured my designs in various layouts. My creations appeared in numerous films and on television on ABC, CNN, MTV, NBC, Fox ……and was worn by newscasters/hosts on regular basis.
All along I stayed true to my life long passion, painting which started at a very young age. Upon moving to Southern California in the late 90’s I focused my ambition into creating my art full time. I started painting large Abstract Expressionistic oil paintings and the galleries and collectors took notice.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My oil paintings have been described as “explosive”. I consider myself an abstract expressionist and strive to express my passion of color and design across my canvases. I have developed my own technique of thick layers of oil color applied with a palette knife until my vision of rich texture and dimensions is achieved. My inspiration is derived from kaleidoscope of colors found in nature. My oil paintings are an expression of how I see life and it’s vibrant energy… Color, combined with my love of design and texture, is what has always inspired me to paint. My biggest satisfaction is hearing from a collector telling me that every time they look at my painting, it puts a smile on their face.
How can artists connect with other artists?
For me, connecting and socializing with other artist is very rewarding and inspiring. The best way to stay in touch with other artists is to visit gallery openings and shows.
