Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicolas O’Connor.
Hi Nicolas, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I got started in the liquor business as the Caipirinha man for a Brazilian cachaca company. I went around New York City to every type of restaurant, bar, and liquor store teaching people how to make caipirinhas. After hundreds of events, I got an amazing overview of how every type of bar worked. From the ultra high end to the local dive bar. This happened at the very beginning of the modern cocktail renaissance and organic food movement we enjoy today. I funneled all this information into creating my own style of cocktail creation and have never looked back. Been 15 years of a lot of fun R and D.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Long lines, long hrs, and long nights. All roads have their ups and downs, but It’s been a dream and a pleasure.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In creating cocktail programs, I try and bring innovation and functionality while honoring the rich history of bar traditions. To elevate the drinking experience and create lasting moments, not just recipes.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
The credit goes to all the wonderful people I’m surrounded with. From the owners down to the Barbacks. The nightlife community is just that, a group of amazing individuals that operate as a team and create an environment for patrons to escape from their daily grind. Without the connections made in this community and I’ll the people I’ve had the joy to work with, I would have left it long ago.
