Today we’d like to introduce you to Nic Jackson.
Nic, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I moved to LA from a small town in Sacramento County called Folsom, CA to pursue music. Studied voice, piano, harmony and theory, composition, and songwriting at MI in Hollywood. Worked restaurant jobs and sang at weddings for years until I was finally able to do music full time. I had the honor of opening for Mint Condition as well as Blackstreet featuring Teddy Riley at The Novo in Los Angeles. Performed at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles as well as The Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. Most recently, I’ve been casted in an animated series on Netflix called “Motown Magic”, which is currently in its first season. So right now, life is pretty good. I’m finally doing what I love for a living!
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am a singer/songwriter/entertainer. I have a single out right now entitled “The Day”, which I co-wrote with my cousin, Jayson Cross. The song is about a man longing for the opportunity to show his person of interest how a woman should be treated, and how good it could be with him. However, the woman is unavailable and in an unhappy relationship. All my songs are drawn from either personal experiences or secondhand stories from things I’ve witnessed or heard about from other people. I just hope to write songs that are relatable and that make people feel something. Sometimes I don’t think I care what they feel; I just want them to feel something. I want people to know that my upcoming debut album is my truth! Some of these songs are brand new, stemming from my most recent life experiences, while some of the other songs have been with me for years, and have stood the test of time while I was in search of my artistic direction. This debut album is a celebration of me giving my songs a chance at life because good music deserves to be heard.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
I define success by being able to support yourself by doing what you love. And if you can do that while creating your own art, then that’s icing on the cake. And if that success can spill over into other avenues of art (movies, commercials, voiceover jobs, etc.), then that’s just great! I think it’s essential to possess a likeable quality that’s very genuine and to be easy to work with. I feel I have that quality already, and it’s not going anywhere.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
People can find my debut single, as well as my upcoming album on all the music outlets out there… Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music, SoundCloud, etc. People can support by buying or streaming my music, as well as attending live shows. Feel free to follow me on Instagram @nicjacksonmusic
