Meet Mother Rose

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mother Rose.

Mother Rose, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
We are an alternative rock band from Southeast Los Angeles (SELA).

What started as a two-man acoustic band with cousins Ruly and Ian Rivas, turned into a 5-piece rock band consisting of family members and life-long friends.

With 5 members, each with our own musical preference and writing style, there are songs in our eclectic catalog of music for seemingly everyone. Singer/guitarist/lyricist Ruly Rivas presents an enraged yet refreshing vocal and songwriting style, whose influences include Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen, Kings of Leon, and Radiohead. Lead guitarist Ian Rivas brings a melodic and sometimes psychedelic approach to his guitar writing, influenced by artists like The Beatles, Pearl Jam, and St. Vincent. Bassist Edgar Rose brings his Spanish Rock and Folk Rock influences into his songwriting and bass playing, with influences that span from Heroes De Silencio to The Devil Makes Three. Rhythm guitarist David Hernandez brings to the table catchy melodies and heavy guitar riffs from his background in Heavy Metal and Hard Rock, with influences the likes of Chevelle, Deftones, and Trivium. Drummer Snoopy Hernandez has a Ska and Punk background, influenced by bands like Rancid and Ska-P, which brings a unique energy and aggressive edge to the band’s already eclectic variety of musical styles.

We pride ourselves in our songwriting and band chemistry, and we feel that our recently released album The Man in All My Stories is a good testament to that—each of us having written a song and contributing to the lyrics. We can confidently say that we found our sound in this album—the “Mother Rose” sound—and we are more than proud of what we’ve accomplished.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
We write music that sounds good to us, primarily because we figured a while back that we can’t please everybody. We write music to groove to, to cry to, to laugh to, to chill to, to think to, to mosh to, to dance to, to walk to, to drive to, and anything in between. Our album, The Man in All My Stories, is a good exhibit of all that.

Musically, it’s got everything from smooth grooves, catchy melodies, aggressive riffs, acoustic vibes, alt-rock vibes, indie vibes, hard rock vibes, and even metal and punk vibes.

Lyrically and thematically, the album touches on personal topics about alcoholism and struggling fathers. The album’s dedication is as follows:

“This album and these songs are inspired by our lives, our fears, our loved ones—their fears and their reality. Dedicated to the fathers in our lives, whether they were there for it or not, and to the fathers, we will become.”

These songs are as much for us as they are for anyone who wants to listen. We love writing our music and we love performing our music with as much energy and excitement as possible.

How can artists connect with other artists?
What has worked for us is throwing our own shows and networking with all the artists who perform with us. If you can’t join or find a community, make one. Social media helps a lot, too. It never hurts to ask another artist if they know of any available shows to play in. Most people think this is a competitive field, but artists need to understand that it takes a community to grow.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
People can check out our website. And follow us on Instagram (@motherrosemusic) and Facebook.

Our music can be found on any major music streaming services like Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, and Google Play.

And people can support us by streaming, downloading, buying, and sharing our music with friends and family. Every little bit counts. They can also support us by coming to our shows and purchasing merch. Singing along helps, too!
