Check Out May’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to May.

Hi May, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I moved to Los Angeles from Israel when I was four years old with my parents and sister. I knew from a young age that I wanted to dance since my dad was always dancing around us. He was a professional dancer in Israel, so my sister and I naturally fell in love with it. At the age of ten, I started training in all the styles. I trained for years while also balancing my school life. I was always at the top of my class and had big dreams for both education and dance. When I turned 17, I got signed by my first dance agent and began pursuing dance professionally. My very first job that year was a My Little Pony commercial. The next year, I graduated from high school in 2015 with a 4.7 GPA and got accepted into UCLA. I majored in Psychology and had the best four years. On top of that, I balanced a double life of being a professional dancer performing in music videos, commercials, and shows with artists. It was the best of both worlds, as I got to pursue two things I really love. After graduating with my degree in Psychology in 2019, I took a year gap to pursue dance a little more before beginning grad school.

Right out of college, I booked my first tour with an icon in the Hispanic community, Marco Antonio Solis. In three months, we traveled through 15 different cities, selling out venues like Madison Square Garden and the Hollywood Bowl. It was a dream come true. Then 2020 hit and the industry shut down. With nothing else to do, I joined Tiktok to continue making videos and share my dancing with the world. I became determined to gain followers, so I stayed consistent and started posting three dances video every single day. It has been exactly a year now and I currently have about 750,000 followers. Tiktok opened up a whole new world for me with social media. Although the industry was closed, I gained so much experience and met so many awesome people around the world because of Tiktok. Currently, I am also in a doctorate program for Clinical Psychology, which is a 5-year program. I am balancing my TikTok life with school and it has been very interesting so far!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My biggest struggle in the last few years was managing my schedule in order to fit everything in. I have always been very ambitious, so I try to do as many things as I possibly can! I always say that I wish there were more than 24 hours in the day so I can do more things!! Although anxiety and stress to get things done have been prominent, the feeling of getting things done afterward always made it worth it.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a dancer, my specialty is Hop Hop but I have also been doing a lot of Latin style dancing lately! Being in the industry for the last eight years, I have a lot of really cool projects that I am super proud of. I have worked at theme parks for about four years, done a bunch of amazing music videos, and got to be apart of a variety of different commercials! I think what sets me apart in this industry is my personality. I have always been a people person and am all about spreading good energy and vibes!

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Since I keep my dance and school life completely separate, most people get really surprised when I tell them what I do. When I tell school friends for the first time, they get super surprised because I am the biggest nerd when it comes to school. I have gotten the term Hannah Montana to describe my double life because it shocks so many people that I am able to balance both effectively!
