Check Out Mara Samuels’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mara Samuels.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Haven Laguna is an interior goods & design store. Which means I sell home interior and gifts but I am also a home designer and love to work with my clients on remodeling home projects. I could easily become a home fixer upper. So, how did this all start? The thought of opening a store started back when I was in college. As an art student, I have always had a creative spirit and originally, I was planning to be an architect. I had created a business plan for the creation a store back then and then just always kept it in the back of my mind. I started a family and the dream for architecture got set aside but I was always creating the store idea in my mind. I worked as a realtor and also as a designer in home remodeling. It was the working in the remodeling field that the opportunity to create my own store opened up in a space in Laguna Beach. The space was run down but the thought of bringing it back to life was part of the joy of creating the store. I opened my doors to Haven Laguna the first week of December 2020 at a time when most business were closing their doors. My signage wasn’t up but I was ready and had already purchased products and decorated the store for Christmas. So I had to open if I want to make money and survive. Opening the store always felt right and the response has been amazing. The Laguna Beach community has been so complimentary and supporting. It is a good feeling when you follow your gut/intuition and it works. I am planning to get my official signage up this month and then launch a Grand Opening event. So stay tuned!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The only oblivious challenge is the whole Covid thing. It has held up things but I’m happy that we are getting over it.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As an artist, I love taking something old and reimagining and creating it into something new. My medium would be homes. I could easily become a house flipper. I love everything from reimagining the elevation to the landscaping. Yes, I love landscaping too. The store is the interior part of that. Finding one of a kind pieces for my clients is so much fun. I have customers that come in and they want to redo their whole house but have no idea how. I love helping them do that.

What’s next?
Yes, the big picture! I am excited to have the store be a popular and established part of the community. I will also be having our store on-line which will be great for those who live out of the area. From there, I am looking to also start more home remodeling projects. The thought of remodeling the darling homes in the area and helping the community revive itself one house at a time is an exciting idea. HGTV, Haven Laguna Fixer Upper here we come!
