Check Out Lauren Mulenos Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Mulenos.

Hi Lauren, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
While I loved the design aspect of fashion, I studied Apparel Merchandising in college which covers more of the business side. I loved the creative outlet of creating, so I sewed on the side. I started making and selling custom “game day dresses” for football games and they were a hit! Around my junior year of college, I could tell that these types of dresses were on the way out and tried to figure out a way to keep up my side hustle. I landed on custom bow ties! I borrowed a bow tie from a friend, made a formula and a pattern and was on my way. I created a blog to showcase all of my designs / write about topics that interested me. After I graduated college, I continued to make bow ties, though with a new stage of life, they ended up being wedding ties versus just Christmas gifts or frat party items. My boyfriend who is now my husband helped me make an ecommerce site, which also housed a new blog site for me as well! Over time I learned that I liked blogging a lot more and could do it from anywhere / didn’t have to crunch over my sewing machine after hours of my corporate job. Today LMents of Style has grown from just fashion to being truly a lifestyle publication covering everything from wellness to travel, and of course what to wear!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Until recently, I’ve always held a corporate job and blogged “full time” on the side. I would spend my lunch breaks working on my blog, work when I got home from my day job, and on the weekend. It was very hard (and still is) to find a work-life balance and balance a social life. Oh and sleep! I’d say it is easier not having a corporate job anymore and though it is in some aspects, sometimes you just don’t want to share/be online and that isn’t much of an option. You have to show up to make money.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My husband and I moved to LA for a job opportunity for him, but also for the opportunities for me. I actually really miss working in wholesale/merchandising and would love to get back into it. I live for analyzing data and making line plans. I moved during Q4 and then the pandemic hit, so maybe someday!

As far as LMents of Style goes, I specialize in writing about somewhat taboo topics/things that others aren’t willing to. One of my most popular posts is how to deal with constipation naturally. People are searching for this and no one is really giving an honest answer! I speak freely about dealing with being diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis, what to expect from a colonoscopy, the ugly truth about adult acne, my battle with scoliosis, all alongside with what to wear to work and designer handbag reviews. I try not to use filters on my Instagram, so others can see my real skin // not have to worry about feeling crummy when they get on my page. Or at least I hope so! In the recent years, I learned that I got the most joy out of writing content that helped other people. Sure I still discuss fashion and will always have a heart for it, but answering real questions people have / can’t find is my favorite thing to do currently. These types of articles take me a lot more time, but in turn are a lot more rewarding.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
My favorite planner is the “My Next 90 Days” planner by Savor Beauty. You can start it anytime and it is for 90 days, which really helps me organize my thoughts, hopes, and goals for each quarter, versus yearly which tends to not be as focused. There’s monthly and daily views and plenty of space to write… and dream!

I am obsessed with the Libby app. I find that I have more time to listen to a lot of books versus sit down and read. Libby is completely free and accesses your library’s inventory. You need a library card, but you can sign up for one within the app!
