Check Out Kemoi Charles’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kemoi Charles.

Hi Kemoi, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born and raise in Saint Thomas, Virgin Island. I’ve always been enamored with fashion, but I didn’t understand where I could fit in, until I went away to college in 2012. It was there that I began to model and really learn the ends and outs of styling, wardrobe and fashion in general. I can recall being made fun of for the way I dressed. I turned those laughs into inspiration, and it truly catapulted my creativity. By the time I graduated I knew that I wanted to one day turn my then creative ideas into a world renowned fashion house. I took my African and Caribbean influences and infused it with my love for British fashion to create my luxury shoe brand KC OFFICIAL. My ethos is simple: Leave a first impression that requires a second look. Artists use paints and brushes to create masterpieces. KC Official believes that shoes can be just that , a walking masterpieces

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh man, it is no secret that starting a business has its own unique challenges. I also know that anything worth having is worth working for. When I launched KC Official in the spring of 2018, I had no idea that two years later a global pandemic would all but ruin my second collection. However, the pandemic allowed me to slow down and really concentrate on the design and marketing of my brand. In my first collection I designed men’s loafers. Some velvet, some leather, some black some browns and reds. In my new collection I have pushed past the norm. My luxury heels and boots for women, has truly exemplified the creative ingenuity that I always knew I had. Despite the challenges, i have been able to remain creative and positive

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
In addition to designing, styling and creating for KC official I enjoy traveling. There was a time when I worked as a flight attendant. I flew all over the world to places like Morocoo, Mexico, Japan and Paris. I was published on several renowned travel blogs such as Essence Travel,m and Travel Noir to name a few. I met all kinds of people and saw and wore all kinds of fashions. This exposure has allowed to pour even more inspo into my collections. It has also allowed me to work with stylists from New York, Miami, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and the Caribbean. I am proud of the brand I have built not only for myself but for the black community as a whole. It is high time that we create our own luxury brands.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Haha, it’s funny that you ask this question because as you know, I was born and raised in Saint Thomas. And well, Island life is much different than what I’ve experienced here in the states. I was popular as a kid and was talented in sports. I played baseball, ran track, played volleyball and danced. I’m talking waking up at 6am to get my siblings ready for school lol, to then taking them there, to going to school myself , then after school sport practices of games, to dance practices, to getting home at midnight sometimes later, to finish my school work and get ready did the next day. Man, I was always busy doing something.

Our island is small, so everybody came out to games and performances. I am talking about the whole island coming out with pots and spoons and blow horns to really support the kids; and I’ve always loved to put on a show. I recently went home and my dad reminded me of all the times we went school shopping. I would be confident and excited in my shoes i picked to get even though they were always “wild and weird” in his and everybody else’s opinion. I remembered it like yesterday, he hated my choices lol. I guess you can say I’ve always had my own style, despite the opinion of others. I’ve always been a hard worker, and a loving son, brother and friend. Most important I grew up learning the importance of remaining grateful and humble, and have carried that with me.
